Synopsis The Environmental Impact Statement After Two Generations by : Michael R. Greenberg

This book is about a subject that Michael Greenberg has worked on and lived with for almost forty years. He was brought up in the south Bronx at a time when his neighborhood suffered from terrible air and noise pollution, and domestic waste went untreated into the Hudson River. For him, the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) was a blessing. It included an ethical position about the environment, and the law required some level of accountability in the form of an environmental impact statement, or EIS. After forty years of thinking about and working with NEPA and the EIS process, Greenberg decided to conduct his own evaluation from the perspective of a person trained in science who focuses on environmental and environmental health policies. This book of carefully chosen real case studies goes beyond the familiar checklists of what to do, and shows students and practitioners alike what really happens during the creation and implementation of an EIS.

Synopsis The Fourth Turning by : William Strauss

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • Discover the game-changing theory of the cycles of history and what past generations can teach us about living through times of upheaval—with deep insights into the roles that Boomers, Generation X, and Millennials have to play—now with a new preface by Neil Howe. First comes a High, a period of confident expansion. Next comes an Awakening, a time of spiritual exploration and rebellion. Then comes an Unraveling, in which individualism triumphs over crumbling institutions. Last comes a Crisis—the Fourth Turning—when society passes through a great and perilous gate in history. William Strauss and Neil Howe will change the way you see the world—and your place in it. With blazing originality, The Fourth Turning illuminates the past, explains the present, and reimagines the future. Most remarkably, it offers an utterly persuasive prophecy about how America’s past will predict what comes next. Strauss and Howe base this vision on a provocative theory of American history. The authors look back five hundred years and uncover a distinct pattern: Modern history moves in cycles, each one lasting about the length of a long human life, each composed of four twenty-year eras—or “turnings”—that comprise history’s seasonal rhythm of growth, maturation, entropy, and rebirth. Illustrating this cycle through a brilliant analysis of the post–World War II period, The Fourth Turning offers bold predictions about how all of us can prepare, individually and collectively, for this rendezvous with destiny.

Synopsis Shirtsleeves to Shirtsleeves in Two Generations by : Gerard Leahy

Because he was so shy of publicity, little is known about J. J. Leahy. He was called by some as the back-country baron, one of Australias most important early pastoralists. With a limited education and no money, he went on to build up a large pastoral empire. He owned or leased over one hundred extensive properties, and at one time, his wool clip was said to be the largest in Australia. He also ran sixty thousand head of cattle on these properties. His numerous big deals became legendary. His bank never required a mortgage over his assets to ??inance his big stock deals. All he needed to do was call his bank manager to let him know he was writing a cheque to cover his latest deal. He travelled ??irst by horse-drawn vehicles and then cars and ??inally was a pioneer in the use of aircraft to cover his area of interest, starting with a converted WWI Bristol ??ighter. At times he controlled one hundred thousand sheep walking on stock routes, besides those run on his large properties. On his travels, he often bought a large mob of sheep with a handshake. He was offered but refused a knighthood.

Synopsis What We Learned by : Helen Raptis

Stories of Indigenous children forced to attend residential schools have haunted Canadians in recent years. Yet most Indigenous children in Canada attended “Indian day schools,” and later public schools, near their home communities. Although church and government officials often kept detailed administrative records, we know little about the actual experiences of the students themselves. In What We Learned, two generations of Tsimshian students – a group of elders born in the 1930s and 1940s and a group of middle-aged adults born in the 1950s and 1960s – reflect on their traditional Tsimshian education and the formal schooling they received in northwestern British Columbia. Their stories offer a starting point for understanding the legacy of day schools on Indigenous lives and communities. Their recollections also invite readers to consider a broader notion of education – one that includes traditional Indigenous views that conceive of learning as a lifelong experience that takes place across multiple contexts.
