Synopsis Mongameli Mabona by : Ernst Wolff
The life and work of a remarkably versatile and pioneering South African thinker Mongameli Anthony Mabona (1929) is a singular South African scholar with an exceptional life path. Yet, he is a wrongly forgotten figure today. British imperialism and apartheid shaped the world into which he was born and, to a large extent, these powers carved out his destiny for him. Nevertheless, a curious set of coincidences enabled him to obtain a tertiary education as a priest, to pursue his doctoral studies in Italy and to befriend Alioune Diop. He is one of the first published philosophers of Anglophone Africa and holds doctorates in theology and anthropology. His opposition to institutionalized racism – an opposition which included his co-authoring the 1970 “Black Priests’ Manifesto” – eventually led to his exile. This book is the first study of any kind devoted to Mabona. It documents his life and offers a synoptic reading of his scholarly and poetic work.

Synopsis Afro-Christianity at the Grassroots by : G.C. Oosthuizen
The spontaneous and rapid growth of indigenous African Christianity, especially in South Africa, has undermined the appropriateness of the term "mainline" for the traditional, denominational churches in the area. Some of these churches lost more than twenty-five percent of their membership in the period 1980-1990, while membership of the indigenous churches increased by a similar percentage in the same period. The contributions to this volume are based on grassroots research and each one treats some significant aspect within the life and work of this vast, self-motivating movement, a movement largely ignored for over a century by western-oriented Christianity. The work of these researchers clearly indicates how it is that African Indigenous Churches, with their holistic approach to religion - a feature of traditional African religion - serve as such a dynamic vehicle in effectively addressing the needs of their flocks. A further focus of the essays is on issues faced by these churches within their own church context.

Synopsis Christianity in South Africa by : Richard Elphick
"At a strategic time in South Africa's history, the Christian history which is absolutely basic to all developments, is presented in a comprehensive and objective way. Too little attention is given to the influence of religion in socio-political accounts. This is a creative and much-needed contribution to scholarship and general knowledge. . . . An outstanding work."--Dean S. Gilliland, Fuller Theological Seminary

Synopsis Mandela by : Tom Lodge
Nelson Mandela, the first African politician to acquire a world following, remains in the 21st century an iconic figure. But what are the sources of his almost mythic appeal? And to what extent did Mandela self-consciously create the status of political hero that he now enjoys? This new and highly revealing biography examines these questions in detail for the first time. Drawing on a range of original sources, it presents a host of fresh insights about the shaping of Mandela's personality and public persona, from his childhood days and early activism, through his long years of imprisonment, to his presidency of the new South Africa. Throughout, Lodge emphasizes the crucial interplay between Mandela's public career and his personal or private world, showing how his heroic status was a product both of his leading position within the anti-apartheid movement and his own deliberate efforts to supply a form of quasi-messianic leadership for that movement. And as Lodge shows, Mandela's huge international appeal is a compelling and unusual cocktail. Of the sacred and the secular. Of traditional African values and global media savvy. And of human vulnerablilty, interwoven with the grand narrrative of liberation.

Synopsis The Afrikaner's Emancipation by : Barry Botha
President Mandela's stand in negotiations, before, during and after imprisonment was attainment of universal democratic rights for all citizens in South Africa. His counterpart, President F W de Klerk's condition was protection of minority rights, a position he knew could not be sustained, but he did persuade whites to support it until he in the end capitulated and they also. The result was a peaceful transition to black majority rule, but a great number of Afrikaners accepted the handing over of power without rejecting their apartheid ideology. The Afrikaner's Apartheid Mindset was based on an attitude of superiority and a false belief that apartheid was scripturally justified. Although most Christian churches rejected apartheid as sin, the biggest Afrikaans Protestant Church, the Dutch Reformed Church only did so in 1986. Many Afrikaner Christians still have not personally accepted this truth, thus binding themselves to unfinished reconciliation. Through reconciliation the Afrikaners need to make amends for a century of injustice against blacks whom they refused parliamentary representation. On the other hand, in the previous century of injustice before the Anglo Boer War 1899, British imperialism sought to end the Afrikaners' independence. Black economic empowerment, a means of compensation or redress, may eventually benefit all parties in the new era, instead of being a cause of frustration and complaint.

Synopsis Historical Dictionary of Ecumenical Christianity by : Ans Joachim van der Bent
This historical dictionary covers the major trends in the 20th century ecumenical movement until today. It deals with developments in the realms of church unity, mission and evangelism, laity, women in church and society, and many other ecumenical subjects. It also covers many programs and activities of the World Council of Churches since its inception in 1948. The longer articles survey important theological themes while short articles provide quick reference on a precise question. The bibliography is not exhaustive-some 50,000 titles have been published since the beginning of this century-but very helpful for major bibliographical information. The dictionary is particularly strong in American subjects and includes a great number of ecuminical personalities which cannot be found in other reference works. This publication is not only an indispensible tool of research for university and seminary libraries but also for individual persons belonging to whatever Christian church who are interested in knowing more about reflections, relations, and activities in the several regions of the ecumenical world. A helpful description of the most important ecumenical assemblies and conferences is provided. To take stock of the past, to interpret the present, and to look forward into the third millenium of Christian existence are exciting and challenging enterprises.
