Synopsis 1946 by : Diana Gillmor Gillmor

Only a few anecdotes about the authors grandparents remained after their deaths more than half a century ago. Research of nearly a decade led her to some startling information and the amazing story of the couples lives. The author also discovered her grandfathers remarkable place in history and that neither Reg or Edwina were ordinary people. From an early age, Edwina had a decidedly European upbringing, highlighted by a convent education and life in several foreign cities. She and her sisters also enjoyed the upper-crust life of Mrs. Astors New York Society and the four hundred. By contrast, the early life of her husband, Reg, was characterized by being the son of a Civil War veteran turned preacher with eight children in a small mid-western town. Fortune smiled on Reg at the age of sixteen, however, when he became the youngest man to enter and graduate from the United States Naval Academy. His succeeding service in the US Navy brought him into contact with a prominent American inventor. A short time later, he joined the gentlemans newly formed company as the second of just three employees. In a few short years, his intelligence and drive propelled both him and the company into the worlds undisputed leader in the invention and manufacture of navigation instruments, virtually ending the age of the compass. The companys weapons guidance systems were also an extreme advantage during wartime, and their aircraft instruments made flight possible and greatly facilitated the possible uses of airplanes, ships, submarines and eventually spacecraft. The products invented and developed by this company are still vital to the performance of all these vehicles. 1946 is a story about these two people. But it also chronicles the rapid transformation of a very small company into the ninth largest in America. Along the way, the early history of flight and advances in associated technology is tracked during the first half of the twentieth century. The continual development of the weaponry of war, through two world wars, and the ever increasing devastation these advances caused to humanity is also chronicled. The book also reveals the devastating and highly unusual events that eventually led to the untimely destruction of a family, one that seemed to have had it all. It is easy to imagine that the combination of the events portrayed in 1946 is the result of the writers clever imagination; they are not. This book is a work of narrative nonfiction. It is also a tribute to two extraordinary people, recognition of their remarkable success and homage to their tragic suffering.

Synopsis Hannibal and Me by : Andreas Kluth

A dynamic and exciting way to understand success and failure, through the life of Hannibal, one of history's greatest generals. The life of Hannibal, the Carthaginian general who crossed the Alps with his army in 218 B.C.E., is the stuff of legend. And the epic choices he and his opponents made-on the battlefield and elsewhere in life-offer lessons about responding to our victories and our defeats that are as relevant today as they were more than 2,000 years ago. A big new idea book inspired by ancient history, Hannibal and Me explores the truths behind triumph and disaster in our lives by examining the decisions made by Hannibal and others, including Albert Einstein, Eleanor Roosevelt, Steve Jobs, Ernest Shackleton, and Paul Cézanne-men and women who learned from their mistakes. By showing why some people overcome failure and others succumb to it, and why some fall victim to success while others thrive on it, Hannibal and Me demonstrates how to recognize the seeds of success within our own failures and the threats of failure hidden in our successes. The result is a page-turning adventure tale, a compelling human drama, and an insightful guide to understanding behavior. This is essential reading for anyone who seeks to transform misfortune into success at work, at home, and in life.

Moviegoers often assume Frank Capra's life resembled his beloved films (such as Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and It's a Wonderful Life). A man of the people faces tremendous odds and, by doing the right thing, triumphs! But as Joseph McBride reveals in this meticulously researched, definitive biography, the reality was far more complex, a true American tragedy. Synopsis Resilience by : Lisa Lisson

An inspiring book for readers of Sheryl Sandberg and Arlene Dickinson Lisa LissonÕs life seemed perfect: she had married her high school sweetheart, applied her marketing degree to a position at FedEx Express Canada, and risen to become a vice president (and would ultimately become president) of the company. One night, after putting their four children to bed, her husband, Patrick, marvelled that their lives seemed perfectly happy. Just a few hours later, everything changed. One moment Lisa was sleeping beside Patrick, and the next, she was kneeling on the floor beside his unconscious body frantically administering CPR. Patrick had had a massive heart attack and was in a coma, and the doctors were blunt: there was no hope. But for the next two years, Lisa stood by his side and awaited a miracle, while continuing to balance life as a high-powered executive and mother of four. Part leadership guide, part memoir of loss, and part personal empowerment primer on how to achieve your goals no matter what the universe throws at you, Resilience is an inspirational story about how to rise to the top in a manÕs world, triumph over adversity, lead a fulfilling life, and live each day with purpose and gratitude.

Synopsis Tragedy Plus Time by : Adam Cayton-Holland

“Inspiring, tragic, and at times heart-rendingly funny.” —People Unsentimental, unexpectedly funny, and incredibly honest, Tragedy Plus Time is a love letter to every family that has ever felt messy, complicated, or (even momentarily) magnificent. Meet the Magnificent Cayton-Hollands, a trio of brilliant, acerbic teenagers from Denver, Colorado, who were going to change the world. Anna, Adam, and Lydia were taught by their father, a civil rights lawyer, and mother, an investigative journalist, to recognize injustice and have their hearts open to the universe—the good, the bad, the heartbreaking (and, inadvertently, the anxiety-inducing and the obsessive-compulsive disorder-fueling). Adam chose to meet life’s tough breaks and cruel realities with stand-up comedy; his older sister, Anna, chose law; while their youngest sister, Lydia, struggled to find her place in the world. Beautiful and whip-smart, Lydia was witty, extremely sensitive, fiercely stubborn, and always somewhat haunted. She and Adam bonded over comedy from a young age, running skits in their basement and obsessing over episodes of The Simpsons. When Adam sunk into a deep depression in college, it was Lydia who was able to reach him and pull him out. But years later as Adam’s career takes off, Lydia’s own depression overtakes her, and, though he tries, Adam can’t return the favor. When she takes her own life, the family is devastated, and Adam throws himself into his stand-up, drinking, and rage. He struggles with disturbing memories of Lydia’s death and turns to EMDR therapy to treat his post-traumatic stress disorder when he realizes there’s a difference between losing and losing it. Adam Cayton-Holland is a tremendously talented writer and comedian, uniquely poised to take readers to the edges of comedy and tragedy, brilliance and madness. Tragedy Plus Time is a revelatory, darkly funny, and poignant tribute to a lost sibling that will have you reaching for the phone to call your brother or sister by the last page.
