Synopsis The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by : Mark Twain

The book that introduced the world to the iconic American characters of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, this 1876 novel by Mark Twain follows the mischievous exploits of the two young boys, who find themselves in situations both humorous and dangerous. Never short of ways to stir up trouble in his hometown on the Mississippi River, Tom uses his wits to get both in and out of tight spots, often with Huck at his side. Featuring moments of significant social commentary, these interconnected tales essentially served as a dry run for Twain's notably weightier sequel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

Synopsis The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by : Mark Twain

Mark Twain was one of the nineteenth century's greatest chroniclers of childhood, and of all his works his beloved novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer most enchantingly and timelessly captures the sheer pleasure of being a boy. Tom Sawyer is as clever, imaginative, and resourceful as he is reckless and mischievous, whether conning his friends into painting a fence, playing pirates with his pal Huck Finn, witnessing his own funeral, or helping to catch a murderer. Twain’s novel glows with nostalgia for the Mississippi River towns of his youth and sparkles with his famous humor, but it is also woven throughout with a subtle awareness of the injustices and complexities of the old South that Twain so memorably portrays.

Synopsis The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (Illustrated) by : Mark Twain

REVIEW "It is altogether brilliant, both on its own terms and as a preparatory step towards the mighty Adventures of Huck Finn and everything else from the man Faulkner called the father of American literature." - The Guardian BOOK DESCRIPTION The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is an 1876 novel by Mark Twain about a young boy growing up along the Mississippi River. It is set in the 1840s in the fictional town of St. Petersburg, inspired by Hannibal, Missouri, where Twain lived as a boy. In the novel Tom Sawyer has several adventures, often with his friend Huckleberry Finn. Originally a commercial failure, the book ended up being the best selling of any of Twain's works during his lifetime. Though overshadowed by its sequel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the book is considered by many to be a masterpiece of American literature, and was one of the first novels to be written on a typewriter.. (Source: Wikipedia) EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK And now at this moment, when hope was dead, Tom Sawyer came forward with nine yellow tickets, nine red tickets, and ten blue ones, and demanded a Bible. This was a thunderbolt out of a clear sky. Walters was not expecting an application from this source for the next ten years. But there was no getting around it--here were the certified checks, and they were good for their face. Tom was therefore elevated to a place with the Judge and the other elect, and the great news was announced from headquarters. It was the most stunning surprise of the decade, and so profound was the sensation that it lifted the new hero up to the judicial one's altitude, and the school had two marvels to gaze upon in place of one. The boys were all eaten up with envy--but those that suffered the bitterest pangs were those who perceived too late that they themselves had contributed to this hated splendor by trading tickets to Tom for the wealth he had amassed in selling whitewashing privileges. These despised themselves, as being the dupes of a wily fraud, a guileful snake in the grass. The prize was delivered to Tom with as much effusion as the superintendent could pump up under the circumstances; but it lacked somewhat of the true gush, for the poor fellow's instinct taught him that there was a mystery here that could not well bear the light, perhaps; it was simply preposterous that this boy had warehoused two thousand sheaves of Scriptural wisdom on his premises--a dozen would strain his capacity, without a doubt. Amy Lawrence was proud and glad, and she tried to make Tom see it in her face--but he wouldn't look. She wondered; then she was just a grain troubled; next a dim suspicion came and went--came again; she watched; a furtive glance told her worlds--and then her heart broke, and she was jealous, and angry, and the tears came and she hated everybody. Tom most of all (she thought).

Synopsis The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (Annotated) by : Mark Twain

Annotations This book is unique because it contains a literary criticism that was made by Juan AcevedoTom Sawyer is a child like any other person in the southern United States of the nineteenth century, who lives in a town called Saint Petersburg on the banks of the Mississippi, a boy with too much energy, a rebel with a big heart and a lot of innocence, who together with his friends, especially Huckleberry Finn, lives adventures that will take them to face their fears in a time and space in which childhood gives the human being the days he will remember the rest of his life.Mark Twain manages to create an endearing character, a child that represents the inner child that carries all adults and a character with whom any child reader can be identified, always dreaming and creating fantasies, a free heart that hates the school's duties but very intelligent, that with small tricks he always manages to get away with it, even if he has to face the consequences. The author creates very good characters, all interesting from Aunt Polly to the Indian Joe, in a bucolic environment in which life goes slowly but the adventures are on the surface, a perfect place for love to arise, a love represented in Becky, the new girl from the town that Tom Sawyer is pledged to, so he will do everything possible to get his attention.Although if the reader believes that everything is beauty, you will find in the middle of the novel a sordid situation that will lead Tom, Huck and Becky to have to face an enemy that from their eyes as children can be the opportunity to be famous in a town where nothing ever happensThe story created by Mark Twain is without a doubt exquisite, tender, memorable, an essential classic that can be read at any age, a whole bucolic painting of remembrances of childhood, a vertiginous adventure that will make the novice or experienced reader enjoy .Life in Saint Petersburg, a small town on the banks of the Mississippi in the southwestern United States, is so peaceful that it can even be boring. But Tom Sawyer, a curious and mischievous boy, is able to take advantage of any daily event, such as painting a fence, or not so everyday, like chasing an evil murderer or going in search of a treasure hidden in a cave, accompanied by his inseparable friend Huck.
