Synopsis California and Back by : Martin Noble Hine

Bound for California at the height of the Gold Rush, Martin Noble Hine celebrates the 4th of July on a ship stranded off the coast of Mexico. This is the beginning of Martin’s 18-month long journey as he seeks his fortune in the Wild West of 1852. Martin’s true-life account paints a vivid picture of his adventures beginning with an unexpected sojourn in Mexico before eventually making his way to old town Sacramento. With a desire for adventure and intending to complete his journey to the Gold Rush region, Martin finds that the West poses more challenges than he could ever imagine. Enduring both devastating fires and disastrous floods along with health epidemics from smallpox, cholera, and typhoid fever it seems as though fate had other plans. With humorous and fascinating anecdotes from this bygone time, you will be transported back to another era as you join 23-year old Martin Noble Hine on his incredible travels to California and back again in this remarkable memoir.

Synopsis The California Idea and American Higher Education by : John Aubrey Douglass

Throughout the twentieth century, public universities were established across the United States at a dizzying pace, transforming the scope and purpose of American higher education. Leading the way was California, with its internationally renowned network of public colleges and universities. This book is the first comprehensive history of California's pioneering efforts to create an expansive and high-quality system of public higher education. The author traces the social, political, and economic forces that established and funded an innovative, uniquely tiered, and geographically dispersed network of public campuses in California. This influential model for higher education, "The California Idea," created an organizational structure that combined the promise of broad access to public higher education with a desire to develop institutions of high academic quality. Following the story from early statehood through to the politics and economic forces that eventually resulted in the 1960 California Master Plan for Higher Education, The California Idea and American Higher Education offers a carefully crafted history of public higher education.

Synopsis From Back Alley to the Border by : Alicia Gutierrez-Romine

In From Back Alley to the Border, Alicia Gutierrez-Romine examines the history of criminal abortion in California and the role abortion providers played in exposing and exploiting the faults in California's anti-abortion statute throughout the twentieth century. Focused on the patients who used this underground network and the physicians who facilitated it, Gutierrez-Romine provides insight into the world of illegal abortion from the 1920s through the 1960s, including regular physicians as well as women and African American abortionists, and the investigations, scandals, and trials that surrounded them. During the 1930s the Pacific Coast Abortion Ring, a large, coast-wide, and comparatively safe abortion syndicate, became the target of law enforcement agencies, forcing those needing abortions across the border into Mexico and ushering in an era of Tijuana "abortion tourism" in the early 1950s. The movement south of the border ultimately compelled the California Supreme Court to rule its abortion statute "void for vagueness" in People v. Belous in 1969--four years before Roe v. Wade. Gutierrez-Romine presents the first book focused on abortion on the West Coast and the U.S.-Mexico border and provides a new approach to studying how providers of illegal abortions and their clients navigated this underground network. In the post-Dobbs moment, From Back Alley to the Border shows us how little we have learned from history.
