Synopsis Sense Organs Integration, and Behavior by : Talbot Waterman
The Physiology of Crustacea, Volume II: Sense Organs, Integration, and Behavior focuses on the three components of self-regulation for crustaceans and examines the behavior that emerges therefrom. This book provides the physiology of the class Crustacea from a comparative point of view. Organized into chapters, this volume starts with an overview of the sensitivity to electromagnetic energy at wavelengths extending from the ultraviolet to the infrared, which is an important adaptive function in crustaceans. This text then explores the innervation of crustacean sensory hairs and describes the sensitivity among crustaceans to external changes in mechanical force by direct contact with solids or by fluid movement. Other chapters consider the two types of pigmentary effectors in crustaceans, namely, the chromatophores and the pigments of the compound eye. The final chapter deals with the four major categories in developing a comparative physiology. Physiologists, biochemists, and researchers will find this book useful.

Synopsis The Crustacean Nervous System by : Konrad Wiese
This unique selection of reviews summarizes current knowledge in all major fields of crustacean neurobiology and all levels of their CNS organization, using lobster and crayfish. It not only imparts theoretical knowledge but also describes all available contemporary and advanced techniques, such as patch clamp recordings, microelectrode techniques, immunocytochemistry, and all methods of molecular genetics to identify cellular pathways of protein synthesis and peptidergic control. In summary, it is a comprehensive account of the research achievements in one of the major nervous systems besides the mammalian CNS.

Synopsis Treatise on Zoology - Anatomy, Taxonomy, Biology. The Crustacea, Volume 3 by : Jac Forest (†)
With this edition, access to the texts of the famous Traité de Zoologie is now available to a worldwide readership. Parts 1, 2, and 3A of volume VII, i.e., the Crustacea, were published in French in, respectively, 1994, 1996, and 1999. Brill recognized the importance of these books and arranged for a translation to be made. However, some of the manuscripts dated from the early 1980s and it was clear from the beginning that in many fields of biology a mere translation of the existing text would not suffice. Thus, all chapters have been carefully reviewed, either by the original authors or by newly attracted specialists, and adequate updates have been prepared accordingly. This third volume of The Crustacea, revised and updated from the Traité de Zoologie contains chapters on: - Neuroanatomy - Neurohormones - Embryology - Relative Growth and Allometry The volume concludes with a list of contributors, as well as with both taxonomic and subject indices.

Synopsis Treatise on Zoology - Anatomy, Taxonomy, Biology. The Crustacea, Volume 9 Part C (2 vols) by : Peter Castro
This volume, 9C, in two parts, covers the Brachyura. With the publication of the ninth volume in the Treatise on Zoology: The Crustacea, we departed from the sequence one would normally expect. Some crustacean groups, mainly comprising the Decapoda, never had a French version produced, and the organization and production of these “new” chapters began independently from the preparation of the other chapters and volumes. Originally envisioned to encompass volume 9 of the series, it quickly became evident that the depth of material for such a volume must involve the printing of separate fascicles. The new chapters have now been completed, and the production of volume 9 was started while volumes 3 through 8 were (and in part still are) in preparation; with this vol. 9C-I & II this volume 9 is now concluded; vols. 1-5 have also been published and vols. 6-8 are being prepared.

Synopsis Olfaction and taste V by : Derek Denton
Olfaction and Taste V contains the proceedings of the Fifth International Symposium on Olfaction and Taste, held at the Howard Florey Institute of Experimental Physiology & Medicine, University of Melbourne, Australia, in October 1974. Contributors discuss the knowledge about olfaction and taste, including the anatomy of receptors and their ultrastructure, innervation of receptor fields, and the processes of receptor ""turnover"". Themes ranging from taste modifiers and receptor proteins to afferent coding; how the sensory code for taste and olfaction are processed and sharpened; and conditioned taste aversions and other taste learning effects in food and fluid intake are discussed. This book is organized into 14 sections encompassing 73 chapters and begins with an introduction to the phylogenetic origins of sweet taste. The discussion then shifts to behavior and the evolutionary emergence of the chemoreceptor systems. This book provides an overview of the basic modalities of taste throughout the vertebrate phylum, along with the powerful selection pressures that operate to contrive phylogenetic emergence of these modalities with attendant survival advantage. It also looks at each modality within the sensory organization of the species set against environmental circumstances during evolution that might be postulated as favoring its emergence and refinement, for example, the emergence of bitter in relation to poisoning. The ontogenesis of taste and some special instances such as chemoreception in aquatic animals are also examined. This book is aimed at students and scientists interested in the fascinating and important problems of chemoreception.

Synopsis Fiddler Crabs of the World by : Jocelyn Crane
Jocelyn Crane presents a survey of the members of the genus Uca, with special reference to their morphology, social behavior, and evolution. Her account is firmly based on numerous field studies along the world's warmer shores and on comparative work in laboratories and museums. Originally published in 1975. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.
