Synopsis The Ministry of the Word and Sacraments (Classic Reprint) by : J. W. Diggle

Excerpt from The Ministry of the Word and Sacraments England to the ministry of the Word and Sacra ments respectively. Similarly with the Ordering of Priests. The same proportion is here maintained as in the Ordering of Deacons. Priests are to be replen ished with the truth of Christ's doctrine for the edification of His Church. In the Epistle chosen for the Ordinal the title priest does not occur, as, indeed, it occurs nowhere in the New Testa ment as a distinctive designation of Christ's ministers. But the ordinand priest is reminded in the Epistle of the early titles of the ministers of Christ's Gospel. Some were apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers. And the work of the ministry of all, whatever their title, was the building up of the Body of Christ in the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God. The dignity and excellency of the priest's office is declared especi ally to be to teach and to feed the Lord's family. And forasmuch as the doing of so weighty a work cannot be compassed except with doctrine and exhortation taken out of Holy Scriptures, and with a life agreeable to the same, the ordinand priest is most earnestly admonished how studious he ought to be in reading and learning the Scriptures. The means whereby he may wax riper and stronger in his ministry. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Synopsis Jonathan Edwards and the Ministry of the Word by : Douglas A. Sweeney

Jonathan Edwards has been recognized as the most influential evangelical theologian of all time. Before his death at the age of fifty-four, he had sparked a new movement of Reformed evangelicals who played a major role in fueling the rise of modern missions, preaching revivals far and wide, and wielding the cutting edge of American theology. He has never gone out of print, and Christians today continue to flock to seminars and conferences on him. In this biography of the great preacher and teacher, historian Douglas Sweeney locates for us the core and key to Edwards' enduring impact. Sweeney finds that Edwards' profound and meticulous study of the Bible securely anchored his powerful preaching, his lively theological passions and his discerning pastoral work. Beyond introducing you to Edwards' life and times, this book will provide you with a model of Christian faith, thought and ministry.

Synopsis Pastors in the Classics by : Leland Ryken

Throughout the history of English literature, church ministers have figured prominently in novels, plays, morality tales, and even poetry. Pastors in the Classics is a unique, unprecedented collection of relevant literary masterpieces in which the pastor's experience is a major part of the story. Part 1 is a reader's guide to twelve important classics written over four centuries and covering seven different nationalities. Each chapter not only describes and interprets the work in question, it also highlights a specific feature of pastoral ministry explored in the work. Part 2 is a handbook that defines the canon of literary masterpieces that deal with the pastor's experience, offering reading suggestions for both ministers and lovers of literature. From the familiar (The Canterbury Tales; Cry, the Beloved Country; and The Scarlet Letter) to the lesser-known (Silence, Witch Wood) to the surprising (A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man), this collection uncovers the good, the bad, and the ugly ways in which pastors have been presented to the reading public for the past half millennium.

Synopsis A Year's Ministry (Classic Reprint) by : Alexander Maclaren

Excerpt from A Year's Ministry But, dear brethren, the law of our lives forbids that that should be the only way in which we grow like Christ. First the blade, then the ear, then the full corn in the ear was never meant to be the exhaustive, all comprehensive statement of the method of Christian progress. You and I are not vegetables and the Parable of the Seed is only one side of the truth about the method of Christian growth. The very word purify speaks to us of another condition it implies impurity, it implies a process which is more than contemplation, it implies the reversal of existing conditions, and not merely the growth upwards to unattained conditions. And so growth is not all that Christian men need they need excision, they need casting out of what is in them they need change as well as growth. Purifying. Excerpt from The Spirit's Ministry The truth contained in these messages has been preached by our fathers, but we and our children need to hear it again. The pulpit is not long silent on any theme until the pulpit ceases to know that theme and be moved by it. But repetition demands vitality as well as theoretical substance, and I think all readers of this book will find this quality out standing. I commend both the book and the author to all with whom a word from me may be supposed to matter. I know the man is a true man of God and that his book is sound scripturally and logically.
