Synopsis The Kingdom of God Biblically and Historically Considered (Classic Reprint) by : James S. Candlish

Excerpt from The Kingdom of God Biblically and Historically Considered I shall endeavour therefore, treating the subject historically, to take into account, not only the prepara tion for the Christian idea Of the kingdom of God in the line of God's Special revelation to Israel, but also those aims and ideas of other nations that partially strove after the same end, and that came afterwards into contact, for good or evil, with the carrying out of Christ's ideal and aim. Synopsis Christ and the Kingdom of God (Classic Reprint) by : Samuel Henry Hooke

Excerpt from Christ and the Kingdom of God I should like to add, both for myself and for many students whom I know, an expression of sincere gratitude to Professor Hogg for his book. He will probably never know how many students have been decisively helped by it. Since the above was set up, Mr. Glover's book, The Jesus of History, has appeared, to the joy of all students of the life of Christ. Synopsis The Kingdom of God, Or Reign of Heaven Among Men (Classic Reprint) by : Francis Asa Wight

Excerpt from The Kingdom of God, or Reign of Heaven Among Men The law in hermeneutics The Unity of Truth has been fully recognised and it is the greatest joy to see all Scripture, whether in the Old or New Testament, that bears upon this theme brought into complete harmony. Every verse has been given its most obvious meaning; for most certainly the Lord knows how to express truth in the clearest way and He means what He says, and says exactly what He desired to say; and all twisting or strain ing of the Scriptures is insulting to God. Beware of the commentator who magnifies obscure truths, putting them in a place of great promlnence. God's light is not put under a bushel waiting for some visionary to lift it Off. AS it is absolutely necessary for a surveyor to find first his beginning corner before he runs his lines, so it is just as essential for a student to find the beginning of God's kingdom, that John and Jesus proclaimed to be at hand, before he can understand the purpose, nature or place of the kingdom of God in the earth. Synopsis The Growth of the Kingdom of God (Classic Reprint) by : Sidney L. Gulick

Excerpt from The Growth of the Kingdom of God A satisfactory treatment would require many months of closet application and an entire volume for the presentation of the evidence. In spite of the comparative length of the chapter, he does not pretend to have treated the subject in any exhaustive way. Indeed, this may be said with equal truth of the whole book. Rather than a minute examination of the facts, he has sought to take a bird's-eye view of the outstanding features, the more conspicuous movements and growth of Christianity. The primary purpose, the Japanese audience, and the practical, rather than the theoretical interest and aim of the book, will thus account for certain of its features, which, if produced under different circumstances, it might not have had. Its value, however, may possibly be increased rather than diminished by these factors and features. His indebtedness to various writers and his sources of information are sufficiently indicated in the course of the successive chapters. His thanks are due to personal friends and kindred who have rendered very material assistance in the forms of stimulus, suggestions, and correction of the manuscript. The defects incident to the attempt to cover so much ground in a single brief work, none realise more than the author. Among such a mass of statistics, errors are inevitable. None will be more glad than the writer to have such pointed out and corrected. That this volume may find its niche of usefulness, and may help onward the growth of the Kingdom, is the one desire of its author. Synopsis The Kingdom of Heaven (Classic Reprint) by : H. Maldwyn Hughes

Excerpt from The Kingdom of Heaven The aim of this volume is practical. Every preacher and teacher has to face the question - What is the Gospel? Jesus began His ministry by proclaiming the advent of the Kingdom of Heaven. It is, therefore, a matter of paramount importance to ascertain the significance of the Kingdom in His teaching. This has been one of the main subjects of theological inquiry during recent years. There are still wide divergencies of interpretation, but there is a growing recognition that neither the 'evolutionary' nor the 'catastrophic' elements in our Lord's teaching can be explained away, if justice is done to the records. I have striven, in these pages, to present both aspects impartially, and to show how they are related to one another. The subject is approached in the light of the critical study of the Gospels, but with a desire to avoid the subjectivity which is so often the bane of the critical method. A theme on which so much has been written offers little scope for originality. I venture, however, to cherish the hope that the presentation of the material may help some of those who are engaged in the practical work of preaching and teaching to a better understanding of the central message of our Lord's ministry. I have to express my obligations to my friend, Rev. Sydney Cave, D.D., Principal of Cheshunt College, who has read most of the manuscript and has made valuable suggestions, and to my wife, who has assisted in reading the proofs and in preparing the index.
