Synopsis Studying Music History by : David Poultney
"With its emphasis on learning, reasoning, and writing about music history and literature, this valuable text is an ideal complement to traditional textbooks and classroom lectures. Among its noteworthy features, Studying Music History, Second Edition: offers a systematic approach to the date of music history and literature; identifies and interprets unidentified music examples and excerpts from historical documents; and demonstrates how to achieve properly written examples of musical knowledge and judgment through a variety of small-scale writing projects. Rather than requiring readers to extract important material embedded in a narrative historical account, author Poultney provides carefully organized structures and tables that not only offer basic data in a succinct format for study but also serve as models for further learning. Studying Music History, Second Edition, will assist readers to lay a foundation for a lifetime of music study." -- Back cover.

Synopsis The Study of the History of Music by : Edward Dickinson
Excerpt from The Study of the History of Music: With an Annotated Guide to Music Literature This book is based upon the plan and method that are followed in the courses of lectures on the history and criticism of music given in the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. The only rational aim of such instruction is to aid the student to examine, think, and conclude for himself. The material for study is found in musical compositions and the critical and historical work of recognized authorities. The time has gone by when the representations of a single book or a single author can meet the demands of an intelligent curiosity. In every department of inquiry in which books are employed it is now taken for granted that afa'fny authorities must be examined, and that the teacher's work consists largely in providing abstracts, topics, references, and similar guides. Such assistance the present author endeavors to furnish to those who are interested in the history of musical art. Synopsis The History of Music by : Waldo Selden Pratt
Excerpt from The History of Music: A Handbook and Guide for Students The present book is the outgrowth of a fragmentary syllabus for classes that was issued in 1897. It is meant to be distinctly a book of reference for students rather than a literary or critical survey of a few salient aspects of the subject, or a specialist's report of original research. Aiming at a certain degree of encyclopædic fullness, it brings together facts and conclusions from a great variety of sources. Much labor has been expended in grouping the material in such a way as to give a systematic impression of the enormous field in view. In many cases somewhat full lists and summaries of details are given, partly to provide means for easy reference, partly to suggest how multifarious are the facts, and sometimes to indicate upon what sort of data are based the general statements that are offered. At every point an effort is made to emphasize the leading tendencies or movements of musical advance, referring to particular styles and composers as illustrations. It was originally intended to include fairly exhaustive bibliographies and a great amount of material was collected; but the magnitude of this branch of the subject precluded its presentation in this volume. In connection with each period in the history, however, a brief statement is made concerning the musical literature of the time, but without any attempt at completeness. This is not in any sense a history of instruments, but some hints are given of the range and interest of the topic, both by statements in the text and by illustrations of selected specimens. The latter are drawn from the well-known collections of the Metropolitan Museum in New York and of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, to the custodians of which the heartiest thanks are due for multiplied courtesies. Synopsis Phrase and Subject by : DeliadaSousa Correa
The confluence between music and literature, long hymned as sister arts, is a newly burgeoning field of critical inquiry. This innovative collection of interdisciplinary essays provides a valuable introduction to the field, mapping the contours of recent research and investigating the mutual aesthetic influence of the two arts and their common historical ground. The examination of literary works using music as an analogy for literary composition and agent of cultural value, and the consideration of musical works whose structure is derived from literary models will excite the interest of both professional scholars and students in the fields of musicology, literary studies and modern European languages. (Legenda 2006) Delia da Sousa Correa is Lecturer in Literature at The Open University. She is the author of George Eliot, Music and Victorian Culture (2002) and editor of
