Synopsis The Byzantine Jewels: Heart of Bellaridon by : Ishani Lal

Making friends and keeping friendship forever is particularly hard. But, what if it is prophesized that the friends will meet? What if it is destined that the friends will never leave each other even if the whole world is against them? Amy always thought that she was a normal girl with a normal life, living in a normal world. But really, who was she kidding? Nothing about her was normal. Neither her sparkling mischievous violet eyes nor her messy jet black hairs are normal. On the eve of her twelfth birthday, Amy, along with her sisters and mother went to a place that proved that this world was beyond actually what it seemed like. All secrets come out and the little normality left in her life, too, breaks loose. Will she find her friends or stay alone like an outcast? Was that prophecy true? What if it was wrong? Join Amy Millicent, Katie Alford, Cedric Aspen, Yamini Srivastava, and Holly Yvonn on their magical journey as they discover their friends and foes. Will they stay together or break apart like some loose strings of thread? Will they grow stronger or become weak as a twig? Find the story of five gems. However and whatever it seems like, in the end, the world is made up of jewels. A story of friends from different countries, their magical bonding and togetherness, struggle and fondness, mystery and fun, aspiration, inspiration and perspiration.

Synopsis Late Byzantine Rings, 1204-1453 by : Jeffrey Spier

Late Byzantine Rings, 1204-1453 is the first study of the rings of the final years of the Byzantine Empire, the period encompassing the Latin occupation of Constantinople (1204-1261) and the restored empire under the Palaiologan rulers until the fall of Byzantium to the Turks in 1453. The rings from this period are remarkable not only for their fine design but also for the variety of inscriptions they bear, including personal names and monograms, official titles, and epigrams composed by Byzantine poets. The book illustrates and discusses nearly fifty rings from the Palaiologan period, as well as some earlier Byzantine rings, contemporary Byzantine jewelry, and related material from Bulgaria, Serbia, and the West. Many of the rings are published here for the first time. The study begins with a review of the great diversity of rings that existed at the end of the twelfth century, just before the Latin Conquest, and suggests that in view of the occupation of both Constantinople and Thessalonica, the production of rings and jewelry in Byzantine style was disrupted. When the Byzantine workshops in Constantinople resumed after 1261, the rings took new forms, combining tradition Byzantine style with considerable Western influence apparent in the style of engraving and the occasional use of engraved gems. The material gathered in this study will be of importance to a variety of students of Byzantine and Medieval history, literature, art, and jewelry. The rings preserve a number of previously unrecorded personal names and titles that shed light on relations between the imperial court and the new landowning class that emerged in the late Byzantine period. Find sites and names also demonstrate a great degree of political and economic contact with neighboring Serbia and Bulgaria. Influence from the West (especially Venice) is apparent in the workmanship of the rings and their frequent use of heraldic devices in Western style. Verses engraved on some rings can be identified as works of both traditional and contemporary Byzantine poets. The surviving rings also demonstrate that fine quality jewelry was still being produced in the imperial court in Constantinople in the Palaiologan period.

Synopsis Jewelry by : Melanie Holcomb

p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 14.0px Verdana} As an art form, jewelry is defined primarily through its connection to and interaction with the body—extending it, amplifying it, accentuating it, distorting it, concealing it, or transforming it. Addressing six different modes of the body—Adorned, Divine, Regal, Transcendent, Alluring, and Resplendent—this artfully designed catalogue illustrates how these various definitions of the body give meaning to the jewelry that adorns and enhances it. Essays on topics spanning a wide range of times and cultures establish how jewelry was used as a symbol of power, status, and identity, from earflares of warrior heroes in Pre-Colombian Peru to bowknot earrings designed by Yves Saint-Laurent. These most intimate works of art provide insight into the wearers, but also into the cultures that produced them. More than 200 jewels and ornaments, alongside paintings and sculptures of bejeweled bodies, demonstrate the social, political, and aesthetic role of jewelry from ancient times to the present. Gorgeous new illustrations of Bronze Age spirals, Egyptian broad collars, Hellenistic gold armbands, Japanese courtesan hair adornments, jewels from Mughal India, and many, many more explore the various facets of jewelry and its relationship to the human body over 5,000 years of world history.

Synopsis The Glory of Byzantium by : Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, N.Y.)

Serves as both visual and textual record of the exhibition of the same name, surveying the art of the Middle Byzantine period from the restoration of the use of icons by the Orthodox Church in 843 to the occupation of Constantinople by the Crusader forces from the West from 1204 to 1261. Conceived as a sequel to the 1976 exhibition "Age of Spirituality," which focused on the first centuries of Byzantium. Preceding the catalogue, 17 essays treat the historical context, religious sphere, and secular courtly realm of the empire, and the interactions between Byzantium and other medieval cultures.
