Synopsis Gaṇeśapurāṇa by : Greg Bailey

This book offers a translation of the seven thousand verses of the second book of the medieval Hindu text, the Ganesa Purana, one of two Puranas dedicated to the important elephant-headed god. In this book the reader is given many narratives about Ganesas ascent to earth in order to kill demonic figures who threaten to overthrow the correct world order. In addition, these narratives contain myths about Ganesa's birth and family as well as some extended and quite humorous myths about ideal devotees of the god.The translation is preceded by a long introduction offering a geographical and historical context for the GanesaPurana. Following the translation are very extensive notes which bring our points of philological interest, but focus mainly on the literary structure of the text and the methods used to present the many myths and narratives in a coherent and fully integrated manner.

Synopsis The Divine Player by : David R. Kinsley

The divine player attempts to analyze the relationship between play and religion in the context of Hinduism. It focuses primarily on the youthful god Krsna. The first part part of the book surveys the role of play among the gods and concludes that play seems to be an intrinsic part of the divine in Hinduism. The second part of the book investigates the role of play in religious cult, again focusing on the various Krsna cults. This section concludes that, although playful themes pervade man's religious activity in devotion to Krsna, cultiic activity may not be reduced to play, as some scholars have suggested. The final section of the book points to examples of divine and cultic play in non-Hindu traditions.

Synopsis The Study of Hinduism by : Arvind Sharma

In this text, leading scholars from around the world take stock of two centuries of international intellectual investment in Hinduism. Since the early 19th century, when the scholarly investigation of Hinduism began to take shape as a modern academic discipline, Hindu studies has evolved from its concentration on description and analysis to an emphasis on understanding Hindu traditions in the context of the religion's own values, concepts and history. Offering an assessment of the current state of Hindu studies, the contributors to this volume identify past achievements and chart the course for what remains to be accomplished in the field.

Synopsis My Affair with Rãdhã by : Kunal Desai

Radha and Krishna have been worshipped as a couple for so many ages. Despite this, why is Rãdhã not listed as one of Krishna’s 16,000 wives? There are many unasked and unanswered questions about the relationship of Rãdhã and Krishna. Due to many myths and folklore, the divine relationship is mistaken as unethical. Rãdhã is said to have been married to Rayan. At the same time, there are numerous stories of Krishna’s and her amorous pastime in the isolated woods of the Vrindavan. It is also said that once Krishna left Vrindavan, he didn’t turn back to Rãdhã. Are all these the partial truths, are they facts or just white lies? My Affair with Rãdhã is a book that unfolds many untold stories about Rãdhã and Krishna—stories beyond their birth, about their passionate love and love-making, about the reason behind their incarnation and separation, stories about their reunion and return from planet Earth. It is an attempt to glorify the divine love.
