Synopsis Brian Lumley's The Best of the Rest by : Brian Lumley
From the Introduction: This pretty much is what the title says. Many of the stories/novellas here will have only been done in limited print runs, such as in fanzines, magazines, pamphlets, special editions or online magazines. It’s a mixed genre of stories and these are what Brian considers the best of the rest of the stories in his body of work. We’ve got 111,000+ words in this collection so that means lots of enjoyment in what is likely the last collection coming from Brian. “The Challenge” As some fools do. But do you dare? Yes? Well, don’t! “The Man Who Photographed Beardsley” They should have been pictures from life – or was he simply impatient? “The Cyprus Shell” There are some you can eat, while others have their own pick-me-ups. “Clean Slate” If you’re in debt to the Devil, don’t mess with look-a-like sisters. “The Deep-Sea Conch” Some species build nests; while others are much like the cuckoo.... “The Ugly Act” But what’s a pimple or two – if there’s only you? “Irving’s Story” Her downstairs knew best, every time. “The Running Man” It may be true you can run – but as for finding a place to hide...? “Somebody Calling” The only way she could. He simply had to listen harder. “Vanessa’s Voice” Both beautiful ... and deadly! “The Vehicle” Some might think of him that way, others as a dyadic personality? “Mandraki” Take care who you lie down with ... and where! “Two Stone Tom” Yes, except he was an entire science heavier than that! “The Long Last Night” Was it just a myth – or a Mythos? “The Weird Wines of Naxas Niss” A wizard’s stolen potion is another man’s gateway to Nirvana...maybe! “Stealer of Dreams” Always remember, once they’re gone they might stay gone!

Synopsis Teach the Best and Stomp the Rest by : William C. Knaak
This book is an experienced analysis of the failures of American schools to provide learning for a majority of its students including those known as the forgotten halfand the reasons for those failures. It explores who is being educated, and what is known about learning in terms of prerequisites, brain differences and cultures. The book describes the failed initiatives of more money, class size reduction, school choice, magnet schools, vouchers, and merit pay for teachers. Charter schools dont cut it for a majority of our children. No Child Left Behind (NCLB) and Race To the Top (RTT) are expensive, unmitigated disasters. The American schools have mostly missed the promise of change and technology and are now engaged in massive fallacious testing, resulting in little benefit to the nation and significant harm to the children. Outrageously priced Higher Education has little to offer to improve the national education malaise, and lumbers on in its dismal, disorderly state. However, American schools in their INNOCENCE are a product of and restricted by their governmental, economic, civic, and ecologic environment. As described in the closure of the book, The Future, the major structural changes needed to re-create our national learning system have overrun national planning and thinking capacity. Fortunately, there are promising patterns of change in progress.

Synopsis Preserve the Best and Conserve the Rest by : Hadley B. Roberts
As a young teenager, I made a game plan that included an education that would lead me to a vocation working with either fish or game animals. The plan would also complement my avocations, hunting and fishing. This was my utopia. Where was this place? After exhaustive reading, I decided that it was somewhere in the Pacific Northwest. No matter what the job was, it could not be repetitive and monotonous as I tend to get bored very easily. It had to be challenging and definitely had to be fun! And it certainly had to be in the outdoors. I absolutely refused to quit until I found that place and job! When I finally graduated from the University of Maine and hung out my shingle, it read Wildlife Conservation. The word conservation meant only one thing to me: that is the wise use of renewable natural resources, with special regards for wildlife and fish. These ideas were instilled in me by the writings of Aldo Leopold in his Game Management and Durward Allen in his Our Wildlife Legacy.
