Synopsis The History of the Balkan Peninsula, from the Earliest Times, to the Present Day (Classic Reprint) by : Ferdinand Schevill

Excerpt from The History of the Balkan Peninsula, From the Earliest Times, to the Present Day This book is concerned with the story of man on the south-eastern projection of Europe, known as the Balkan peninsula. For practical purposes the story begins with the Greeks, because the Balkan the Greeks, though not the original inhabitants of the peninsula, were the first to leave a clear record of themselves and their about three neighbors. From the Hellenic period, when the mists hiding the land from view begin to lift, to the twentieth century of the Christian era is a span of about three thousand years. During that long stretch of time what migrations, wars, settlements, worships, and civilizations make their appearance in the deep perspective of Balkan history! What peoples march across the soil, fair-haired, strong-limbed warriors clothed in skins, succeeded by dark, bronzed men, curved over the backs of horses and alert for plunder! What empires come and go, one moment mounting resistlessly like a wave of the sea, the next dissolving in a cloud of spray! An epic tale is about to engage our attention calling for infinite patience with the intricacies of a deliberately moving plot and demanding an unswerving attachment to pilgrim man as well as a constantly renewed interest in the riddle of his destiny. In order to give the reader a swift preliminary view of the material to be brought to his attention, it is proposed to devote eastern this chapter to a recital of the leading phases of the Balkan story. If history, like Time itself, is a continuous stream, it falls, under the scrutiny of the ordering mind, into periods more or less distinct and possessed of well-marked characteristics. Synopsis Travels and Politics in the Near East (Classic Reprint) by : William Miller

Excerpt from Travels and Politics in the Near East This book is the result of four visits to the Balkan Peninsula in the years 1894, 1896, 1897, and 1898, and of a long study of the Eastern question. While I can honestly say that I have acquainted myself with all the principal works which have appeared on the Near East during the last ten years, I have in all cases relied upon my own personal observations and inquiries, conducted upon the spot, for the statements made in the following pages. Most persons who have written upon south-eastern Europe have treated the subject in a partisan spirit, some championing the claims of one nationality, others espousing the cause of another. Not being an enthusiastic admirer of any one Balkan race to the exclusion of all others, I have endeavoured to discover what is most for the material progress and welfare of them all. The critics of The Balkans were kind enough to say that I had been impartial in narrating the history of the Peninsula; I trust that I may be found to have been equally so in describing its present condition. Synopsis The Inner History of the Balkan War (Classic Reprint) by : Reginald Rankin

Excerpt from The Inner History of the Balkan War Nothing can exceed the beauty of the rocky ravine through which the northern road winds as it approaches Tirnova. Here and there the slopes are exquisitely green, dotted with forest trees and fragrant hawthorn in other places tall perpendicular crags obtain the mastery, and frown down upon the traveller to the right and left, while feet the foaming waters of the Jantra dash swiftly along, half hidden by the luxuriant foliage, as they carry the melted snows of the Balkans to the broad bosom of the Danube. A sudden turn of the road brings him to the entrance of the town, and it is not without a pang of disgust that he finds himself in a dirty, ill-paved, malodorous street, the closely built houses of which shut out all View of the lovely valley through which the river winds as it almost encircles the ancient city of kings and priests. The town lies on a rocky peninsula, and it is necessary to descend to the banks of the river, or, if possible, to scale the dizzy heights on the Opposite side, in order to appreciate the extreme beauty of its Situation. The houses cluster on the precipice like sea-birds on some ocean crag, the red-tiled roofs rising one above the other in picturesque confusion, here and there relieved with trees and tiny vineyards, which seem literally to hang over the rapid torrent beneath. On the other side of the river one of those serrated ridges of rock so commonly found in this part of Bulgaria, rises in the form of an amphitheatre, almost completely surrounding the town, and crowning a verdant slope which, on the western Side, is clothed with a forest of lofty trees. Synopsis Light on the Balkan Darkness (Classic Reprint) by : Crawfurd Price

Excerpt from Light on the Balkan Darkness Our Near Eastern policy has not hitherto pro duced very satisfactory results. We have, perhaps, failed to differentiate between friends and potential enemies, and it is more than probable that a clearer appreciation of some of the arguments outlined in this little volume would have saved us from at least some of our mistakes. At our bidding Serbia has consented to concessions which entail a sur render of her most vital national interests, and has thus demonstrated her attachment to the Powers of the Triple Entente in a manner which must provoke our profound admiration. Unfortunately, a full discussion of the existing position is rendered impolitic by the critical nature of the diplomatic situation in the Balkans, and one can only hope that subsequent developments will justify the heavy sacrifices which we have called upon our Ally to make in the common weal.
