Synopsis Better Beekeeping by : Kim Flottum
“The most lucid call to action ever written about land-based beekeeping” from the author of The Backyard Beekeeper (Tammy Horn, author of Bees in America and Beeconomy). Backyard beekeepers everywhere agree: a successful colony is a thing of beauty. Thousands of beekeepers have started beekeeping thanks to Kim Flottum’s first book, The Backyard Beekeeper, and they have added to their repertoire of skills with The Backyard Beekeeper’s Honey Handbook. Now, Better Beekeeping answers the question, “What do I do now that I’m a beekeeper?” This book takes serious beekeepers past the beginning stages and learning curves and offers solutions and rewards for keeping bees a better way. Better queens, better winters, better food, and better bees await any beekeeper willing to take on the challenge of having the right number of bees, of the right age, in the right place, in the right condition, at the right time. “There are numerous beekeeping books on the shelves that instruct on ‘how to,’ but Better Beekeeping is a book that explores ‘why to,’ which is essential for this ever-changing world of beekeeping today.” —Jennifer Berry, research coordinator at the University of Georgia’s Honey Bee Research Lab, commercial queen, and columnist for Bee Culture magazine

Synopsis More Than Honey by : Markus Imhoof
The acclaimed director shares a gorgeously photographed and “wonderfully thorough immersion in the world of bees and beekeeping” (Rowan Jacobsen, author of Fruitless Fall). The saying goes that without bees, humankind would only survive for four more years; these crucial pollinators are, indeed, worth more than honey. In his award-winning documentary More Than Honey, Markus Imhoof introduced audiences to the fascinating world of bees and the perils of Colony Collapse Disorder. Now Imhoof joins with nature writer Claus-Peter Lieckfeld to go deeper into the complex relationship between bees and humans. This book examines the history and current status of our relationship to and reliance on bees while exposing the human behaviors contributing to the decline of the bee population—a decline that could ultimately contribute directly to a world food problem. Illustrated with jaw-droppingly detailed photos of bees, More Than Honey is a fascinating, accessible overview of a species that is inextricably tied to our survival.

Synopsis Wax Extraction for the Back Yard Beekeeper by : Dave Atherton
Dave Atherton first encountered bees in July 1955, when he helped to catch a swarm in his uncle's garden in Market Deeping, Lincolnshire. Note the school blazer and shorts. However, the sad truth is that he had no further involvement with bees for the next 39 years, when in 1994 he retired from his employment in a synthetic fibre factory, and a work colleague gave him a retirement gift of bees. Dave went on to be Secretary of the Roe Valley Beekeepers' Association for 10 years, Honey Show Manager for 15 years, and served in several positions on the Executive Committee of the Ulster Beekeepers Association. He is also a member of the Derry & District BKA. Several issues are now obliging him to reduce his beekeeping activities. Age (approaching four-score), health (not allowed to eat honey) and a severe allergy to bee stings, are all contributing to this decline.
