Synopsis The Impact of Tablet PCs and Pen-based Technology on Education by : Dave A. Berque
The tablet PC and similar pen-based devices are being embraced by a wide variety of disciplines as tools for the radical enhancement of teaching and learning. Deployments of Tablet PCs span all the K-12, higher education, and graduate levels and deal with an amazingly diverse range of subject areas, including geology, writing, mathematics, computer science, Japanese language, physics, engineering, business, economics, and technical communications. Despite the diversity of content areas, many deployments generate a singular passion among students and teachers. In April of 2006, a group of educators gathered to exchange ideas at the First Workshop on the Impact of Pen-based Technology on Education (WIPTE). The editors have selected a subset of papers that were presented at WIPTE for inclusion in this book. The papers have been selected for their broad appeal, diverse content, and insightful evaluations. The collective experiences of these authors will help the reader to identify best practices with regard to the educational use of pen-based computing.

Synopsis The Tao of Islam by : Sachiko Murata
The Tao of Islam is a rich and diverse anthology of Islamic teachings on the nature of the relationships between God and the world, the world and the human being, and the human being and God. Focusing on gender symbolism, Sachiko Murata shows that Muslim authors frequently analyze the divine reality and its connections with the cosmic and human domains with a view toward a complementarity or polarity of principles that is analogous to the Chinese idea of yin/yang. Murata believes that the unity of Islamic thought is found, not so much in the ideas discussed, as in the types of relationships that are set up among realities. She pays particular attention to the views of various figures commonly known as "Sufis" and "philosophers," since they approach these topics with a flexibility and subtlety not found in other schools of thought. She translates several hundred pages, most for the first time, from more than thirty important Muslims including the Ikhwan al-Safa', Avicenna, and Ibn al-'Arabi.

Synopsis Pen-and-Paper User Interfaces by : Jürgen Steimle
Even at the beginning of the 21st century, we are far from becoming paperless. Pen and paper is still the only truly ubiquitous information processing technology. Pen-and-paper user interfaces bridge the gap between paper and the digital world. Rather than replacing paper with electronic media, they seamlessly integrate both worlds in a hybrid user interface. Classical paper documents become interactive. This opens up a huge field of novel computer applications at our workplaces and in our homes. This book provides readers with a broad and extensive overview of the field, so as to provide a full and up-to-date picture of pen-and-paper computing. It covers the underlying technologies, reviews the variety of modern interface concepts and discusses future directions of pen-and-paper computing. Based on the author’s award-winning dissertation, the book also provides the first theoretical interaction model of pen-and-paper user interfaces and an integrated set of interaction techniques for knowledge workers. The model proposes a ‘construction set’ of core interactions that are helpful in designing solutions that address the diversity of pen-and-paper environments. The interaction techniques, concrete instantiations of the model, provide innovative support for working with printed and digital documents. They integrate well-established paper-based practices with concepts derived from hypertext and social media. Researchers, practitioners who are considering deploying pen-and-paper user interfaces in real-world projects, and interested readers from other research disciplines will find the book an invaluable reference source. Also, it provides an introduction to pen-and-paper computing for the academic curriculum. The present book was overdue: a thorough, concise, and well-organized compendium of marriages between paper-based and electronic documents. Max Mühlhäuser, Technische Universität Darmstadt Everyone interested in how to design for real-world activities would profit from reading this book. James D. Synopsis Frontiers in Pen and Touch by : Tracy Hammond
This inspirational book contains evidence-based research presented by educational scientists, for the advancement of stylus-based technology and its applications for college and K-12 classrooms. Writing and sketching are an important part of teaching and learning, and digital ink technologies enable us to perform these activities in a digital world. Frontiers in Pen and Touch aims to highlight software and hardware practices and innovations, to encourage transformational use of pen and touch in the classroom. The content of the book is derived from the 2016 Conference on Pen and Touch Technology on Education (CPTTE). Chapters written by academic practitioners provide stories of success for ink, including multimedia content creation and increasing student engagement. Industry and academic researchers share their findings and present intelligent systems that enable pen and touch systems to teach and motivate students. This book is a must-read for anyone wanting to harness and integrate pen and touch for improving today’s student experiences.
