Synopsis Speech of the Hon. C. B. Smith, of Indiana, on the Memorial of the Democratic Members of the Legislature of Rhode Island by : Caleb Blood Smith

Excerpt from Speech of the Hon. C. B. Smith, of Indiana, on the Memorial of the "Democratic Members" Of the Legislature of Rhode Island: Delivered in the House of Representatives of the United States, March 14, 1844 I cannot believe, mr._speake1, that it has ever been expected, either by those who signed this memorial, or by those who have been instrumental in bringing it before the House, that any serious action would be had upon it here. We are about entering upon an important political canvass - 41. Contest for the supremacy f01 the next tour' years is about being commenc ed between the political parties which divide the people - the party which was driven from power in 1840, for its nun1e1ous and gross abuses, is again seeking possession of the Government. Its leaders, with an appe tite 0for the spoils, whetted by afour years abstinence, have again spiead upon the breeze the standard of Locofocoism. To encomage their follow ers, and affmd them some prospect of success, some new questions must be presented, and some new issues taised. The stale and -exploded humbugs of Mr. Van. Buren's Administration will no longei answer the ptnpose of deluding the people. Some new political capital must. Be manufacttued, as a basis for futtne 0pe1ations. This capital is. To be sought for in the Dow rebellion of Rhode Island. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
