Synopsis Iron Ship-Building by : John Grantham
Excerpt from Iron Ship-Building: With Practical Illustrations The Object of the communication was to institute an inquiry into the advantages to be derived from employ ing iron as a material for building ships, and to com pare such vessels with those built Of timber. The paper was subsequently published in the form of a pamphlet, with plates, and was favourably noticed in all the publications of the day. The time seems to be favourable for resuming the subject, and for laying before the public such further information as the last fifteen years have so amply provided. Synopsis Naval Architecture by : Samuel James Pope Thearle
Excerpt from Naval Architecture: A Treatise on Laying Off and Building Wood, Iron, and Composite Ships It is believed that this volume will be found to contain nearly all the problems in Laying Ofi' which occur in actual practice on the mould loft floor; and, in addition thereto, a number of problems which, while not met with in practice, are yet valuable as exercises to strengthen the student's knowledge of the subject, and are often set in examinations to test that knowledge. I am indebted to Mr. G. Crocker, of Devonport yard, for assistance in preparing Chapter VII., which is devoted entirely to the consideration of a difficult class of these problems. Mr. J. Logan of Chatham yard has also kindly assisted me in the preparation of Chapter X., which treats of Laying Ofi' iron ships of war. In endeavouring to discuss the details of shipbuilding within the limits of this work, want of space has rendered it necessary to consider only the operations carried out on the building slip, prior to launching. Synopsis The Handbook of Iron Shipbuilding (Classic Reprint) by : Thomas Smith
Excerpt from The Handbook of Iron Shipbuilding The author being aware of the generally expressed want in all books published on the subject of Iron Shipbuilding - in many of which the theory of the lines, displacement, &c., are treated as if for the especial benefit of a Senior Wrangler at Cambridge, and utterly useless to the Shipbuilder and others, as the practical part is either very slightly touched upon, or entirely ignored - wishes to supply this void, without entering into theoretical investigations, which when written are seldom or never read. He has, during a long and varied experience, extending over twenty years in different parts of the United Kingdom, been at great pains to include in bis notes such information as is really useful, carefully eliminating what has been, during the rapid advance of the science of Shipbuilding, shown to be superfluous or obsolete. He has constantly kept in view two objects: - Firstly. To make this a useful handbook for the Shipowner, not only regarding the construction of a vessel, but also as to the cost of work in all the great centres of the shipbuilding trade in the United Kingdom. Synopsis Wooden Ship-Building (Classic Reprint) by : Charles Desmond
Excerpt from Wooden Ship-Building These rules stipulate the kinds and dimensions of materials that must be used for each principal part of hull and equipment, and also the manner in which the parts should be put together; and as the rules are based upon results of actual tests made by practical shipbuild ers and owners all over the world, it is evident that both builder and owner have every reason to adhere to them. Synopsis Shipbuilding in Iron and Steel by : E. J. Reed
Excerpt from Shipbuilding in Iron and Steel: A Practical Treatise, Giving Full Details of Construction, Processes of Manufacture, and Building Arrangements MY principal object in writing this book has been to furnish to shipbuilders, and to shipbuilding officers of all grades, fuller information respecting the details of ship construction in iron and steel than any previous work records. In the body of the book I have borne repeated testimony to the merits of the existing writings of Mr. Grantham, Mr. Scott Russell, Dr. Fairbairn, Professor Rankine, and others; but none of these either gives, or professes to give, that copious detailed information of which those who have to superintend the practical operations of shipbuilding, and even cultivated workmen, have often felt the want.
