In the 20th century, many mathematicians in Russia made great contributions to the field of mathematics. This invaluable book, which presents the main achievements of Russian mathematicians in that century, is the first most comprehensive book on Russian mathematicians. The editorial board for the History of Mathematics series has selected for this volume a series of translations from two Russian publications, Kolmogorov in Remembrance and Mathematics and its Historical Development. This book, Kolmogorov in Perspective, includes articles written by Kolmogorov's students and colleagues and his personal accounts of shared experiences and lifelong mathematical friendships. The goal of this book is to present a portrait of the n n-dimensional Cremona group with an emphasis on the 2-dimensional case. After recalling some crucial tools, the book describes a naturally defined infinite dimensional hyperbolic space on which the Cremona group acts. This space plays a fundamental role in the study of Cremona groups, as it allows one to apply tools from geometric group theory to explore properties of the subgroups of the Cremona group as well as the degree growth and dynamical behavior of birational transformations. The book describes natural topologies on the Cremona group, codifies the notion of algebraic subgroups of the Cremona groups and finishes with a chapter on the dynamics of their actions. This book is aimed at graduate students and researchers in algebraic geometry who are interested in birational geometry and its interactions with geometric group theory and dynamical systems.

The role of Yuri Vasilyevich Prokhorov as a prominent mathematician and leading expert in the theory of probability is well known. Even early in his career he obtained substantial results on the validity of the strong law of large numbers and on the estimates (bounds) of the rates of convergence, some of which are the best possible. His findings on limit theorems in metric spaces and particularly functional limit theorems are of exceptional importance. Y.V. Prokhorov developed an original approach to the proof of functional limit theorems, based on the weak convergence of finite dimensional distributions and the condition of tightness of probability measures. The present volume commemorates the 80th birthday of Yuri Vasilyevich Prokhorov. It includes scientific contributions written by his colleagues, friends and pupils, who would like to express their deep respect and sincerest admiration for him and his scientific work.​

The main subject of this book can be viewed in various ways. The work of Professor Eduard Cech had a si~ificant influence on the development of algebraic and general topology and differential geometry. This book, which appears on the occasion of the centenary of Cech's birth, contains some of his most important papers and traces the subsequent trends emerging from his ideas. The body of the book consists of four chapters devoted to algebraic topology, Cech-Stone compactification, dimension theory and differential geometry. Each of these includes a selection of Cech's papers, a brief summary of some results which followed from his work or constituted solutions to the problems he posed, and several selected papers by various authors concerning the areas of study he initiated. The book also contains a concise biography borrowed with minor changes from the book Topological papers of E. tech, a list of Cech's publications and a very brief note on his activity in the didactics of mathematics. The editors wish to express their sincere gratitude to all who contributed to the completion and publication of this book.

Spectral Theory of Guided Waves represents a distillation of the authors' (and others) efforts over several years to rigorously discuss many of the properties of guided waves. The bulk of the book deals with the properties of eigenwaves of regular waveguiding systems and relates these to a variety of physical situations and applications to illustrate their generality. The book also includes considerable discussion of the basic properties of normal waves with quadratic operator pencils. Unique in its coverage of these subjects, the book will be of interest to engineers, applied mathematicians, and physicists with a working knowledge of functional analysis and spectral theory.

Vladimir Abramovich Rokhlin (8/23/1919–12/03/1984) was one of the leading Russian mathematicians of the second part of the twentieth century. His main achievements were in algebraic topology, real algebraic geometry, and ergodic theory. The volume contains the proceedings of the Conference on Topology, Geometry, and Dynamics: V. A. Rokhlin-100, held from August 19–23, 2019, at The Euler International Mathematics Institute and the Steklov Institute of Mathematics, St. Petersburg, Russia. The articles deal with topology of manifolds, theory of cobordisms, knot theory, geometry of real algebraic manifolds and dynamical systems and related topics. The book also contains Rokhlin's biography supplemented with copies of actual very interesting documents.
