Spectroscopy in its broadest sense deals with the interaction of light with matter. Spectroscopic techniques contribute a lot to various diverse research areas including material processing and characterisation, communication, forensic science, defence, etc. The rapid expansion of research activity in the field of material science evokes the need for different analytical and diagnostic techniques. Spectroscopy is such an analytical and diagnostic tool, extremely used to characterise materials. It is now commonly used by astrophysicist, mineralogists, nano-physicists or even scientists working in medical research. This book has therefore been prepared to provide easy access to basic information on different spectroscopy techniques and related instrumentation. This book is intended as a guide to the novice reading technical books or facing the complexities while dealing with the concept of spectroscopic techniques and their instrumentation. The authors of chapters presented in this book are all experts in their fields and were instructed to give substantial information to enable novices to learn and understand the advanced spectroscopic techniques. The present book primarily provides details about the time resolved spectroscopy; laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS); Raman spectroscopy; nonlinear spectroscopy; microwave spectroscopy; up conversion spectroscopy, etc

Synopsis Infrared Spectroscopy by : Daniel Cozzolino
Since Herschel discovered light in the near-infrared region as early as 1800, the NIR region of the electromagnetic spectrum, once regarded as having little potential for analytical work, has now become one of the most promising techniques for molecular spectroscopy in several analytical fields. Over the last three decades, the development of new applications of infrared spectroscopy has been associated with increased power of computers and progress in chemometrics. This book introduces and presents several novel applications of NIR spectroscopy in biology, medicine, food science, the pharmaceutical sciences, polymers and minerals, for the first time in a single book. It is written by an international panel of scientists with a vast expertise in the field of infrared spectroscopy, providing unique views and perspectives on both practical and theoretical applications. This book should serve as a reference source for undergraduate and postgraduate students, scientists and researchers in the field of infrared spectroscopy.

Synopsis Advances in Mass Spectrometry by : R. M. Elliott
Advances in Mass Spectrometry, Volume 2 documents the proceedings of a conference on mass spectrometry held in Oxford in September 1961. This compilation is categorized into six major topics — mass spectrometry in research; mass spectrometry of inorganic compounds; instruments and techniques; theory and correlation of mass spectra; mass spectra and analysis; and ionization and dissociation. Under these major topics, parts of the papers discussed include field ionization mass spectroscopy; initial kinetic energy discrimination effects in crossed-field ion sources; mass spectrometric study of CaO and Ta; and spark source mass spectrometry as an analytical technique. The book also covers discussions on initial energy of hydrocarbon fragment ions; determination of the structure of alkaloids by mass spectrometry; and application of a time-of-flight mass spectrometer to the examination of ion-molecule interactions. This volume is a useful reference to students and researchers conducting work on mass spectrometry.

Synopsis Chiral Analysis by : P.L. Polavarapu
Chiral Analysis: Advances in Spectroscopy, Chromatography and Emerging Methods, Second Edition covers an important area of analytical chemistry of relevance to a wide variety of scientific professionals, including chemistry graduate students, analytical chemists, organic chemists, professionals in the pharmaceutical industry, and others with an interest in chirality and chiral analysis. This thoroughly revised second edition covers several new, important areas of chiral analysis that have emerged since the first edition. Three of the new methods provide higher sensitivity than can be realized with the current methods and are expected to become mainstream applications: cavity based methods offer vastly higher sensitivity than conventional polarimetric methods, microwave chiral detection provides unsurpassed sensitivity for identifying diastereomers, and the rotating electric field method offers a competing new approach for the separation of enantiomers. Another topic, chirality in extraterrestrial life, has not been discussed in any other book and is important for understanding the origin of life. - Offers the only book to cover both spectroscopic and separation methods in a single volume - Provides an up-to-date and detailed review of the various techniques available, including new techniques that have emerged since the first edition - Includes contributions from a range of leading experts in the field, now edited by award-winning chirality researcher Prasad Polavarapu

Synopsis Advanced Mass Spectrometry-based Analytical Separation Techniques for Probing the Polar Metabolome by : Rawi Ramautar
The efficient analysis of polar and charged metabolites in biological samples remains a huge challenge in the field of metabolomics. Over the past years, novel mass spectrometry-based analytical tools have been developed to enable the sensitive and efficient profiling of polar ionogenic metabolites in various biological samples. This book gives the reader a comprehensive overview of these recent technological developments. Topics covered include the use of chemical labelling strategies for allowing the analysis of polar metabolites using reversed-phase liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (RPLC-MS) and the latest methodological developments in RPLC-MS, hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC)-MS and ion-pair LC-MS approaches. Attention is also paid to developments in nano-LC-MS and capillary electrophoresis–mass spectrometry methods specifically for profiling polar metabolites in small volume biological samples. The utility of ion-mobility MS and NMR spectroscopy will also be outlined. Sample preparation is the key part in the analytical workflow employed for metabolomics. Therefore, ample emphasis will be given on recent solid-phase extraction and solid-phase micro-extraction methods. Finally, analytical techniques for chiral metabolic profiling will also be considered. Discussing the state-of-the-art of the proposed topics in one single book for probing the polar metabolome, using relevant examples, is unique and needed in the metabolomics field. This book has relevance and appeal to an international audience of analytical and biomedical researchers in industry and academia.
