Synopsis What's Your Zip Code Story? by : CJ Gross

Shedding light on class division, this book offers solutions to class bias in the workplace by analyzing real experiences, social norms, education, wealth, and more. The renewed focus on class, race and equality in the workplace and beyond is making an indelible mark on society. This clarion call for change is sweeping inequality from every corner of the nation, including law enforcement, schools, and businesses. And within the past five years, diversity and inclusion, as well as unconscious bias, have been the main drivers of organizational training, politics, and community engagement. What’s Your Zip Code Story helps clarify the intersection of class bias and racial disparity in the workplace and arms organizations with the knowledge to not only have productive discussions, but also adopt effective solutions. Gross instructs class-migrants—whether college students, recent graduates, or overlooked employees—on how to climb the career lattice and transform themselves from undervalued employees to respected leaders. The book tackles challenges that class-migrants encounter when navigating the workplace and provides operative practices that can be utilized to hone new professional skills and drive positive change in workplace culture. It is a powerful tool that will inspire marginalized employees who are hungry for personal and professional growth, as well as give insight to business leaders seeking a new way to engage their teams. Through the lived experiences of the author and research-based strategies, readers will find insights on how to increase workplace engagement and business performance.

Synopsis In the Steps of Alan Turing: Working in the Digital Age by : James Lenton Alty

Computing has developed at an astonishing pace over the last 40 years and Professor Alty has been involved in most aspects from working at the bits/bytes level to higher level management. As a member of the Computer Board for Universities and Research Councils between 1976–81, he chaired a very influential working party on microtechnology which had a major impact both in universities and in industry. One commentator wrote “This report should be tattooed on the DTI’s backside”! In 1976, he and his team were the first to recognise that the postcode was much more important than assisting the posting of letters, and they pioneered its commercial use. He spent a great deal of effort making computers easier to use for the average person. Between 1984 and 1990, he was Executive Director of the Turing Institute for Artificial Intelligence and became very involved with artificial intelligence research around the world. Between 1990 and 2000, his research team made significant improvements to critical computer interfaces in power stations and aircraft. In the 1990s, Professor Alty examined the techniques of musical composition and showed that they could be used in computer interfaces. In 1996, he pioneered the commercial use of digital radio, producing with Roberts Radio the first successful DAB Radio, one of which is on display in the British Science Museum. Finally, in 2000 he and his team performed some important research into dyslexia, which is still highly quoted even today. This book provides an interesting insight into working in the digital age.

Synopsis Code Design for Dependable Systems by : Eiji Fujiwara

Theoretical and practical tools to master matrix code design strategy and technique Error correcting and detecting codes are essential to improving system reliability and have popularly been applied to computer systems and communication systems. Coding theory has been studied mainly using the code generator polynomials; hence, the codes are sometimes called polynomial codes. On the other hand, the codes designed by parity check matrices are referred to in this book as matrix codes. This timely book focuses on the design theory for matrix codes and their practical applications for the improvement of system reliability. As the author effectively demonstrates, matrix codes are far more flexible than polynomial codes, as they are capable of expressing various types of code functions. In contrast to other coding theory publications, this one does not burden its readers with unnecessary polynomial algebra, but rather focuses on the essentials needed to understand and take full advantage of matrix code constructions and designs. Readers are presented with a full array of theoretical and practical tools to master the fine points of matrix code design strategy and technique: * Code designs are presented in relation to practical applications, such as high-speed semiconductor memories, mass memories of disks and tapes, logic circuits and systems, data entry systems, and distributed storage systems * New classes of matrix codes, such as error locating codes, spotty byte error control codes, and unequal error control codes, are introduced along with their applications * A new parallel decoding algorithm of the burst error control codes is demonstrated In addition to the treatment of matrix codes, the author provides readers with a general overview of the latest developments and advances in the field of code design. Examples, figures, and exercises are fully provided in each chapter to illustrate concepts and engage the reader in designing actual code and solving real problems. The matrix codes presented with practical parameter settings will be very useful for practicing engineers and researchers. References lead to additional material so readers can explore advanced topics in depth. Engineers, researchers, and designers involved in dependable system design and code design research will find the unique focus and perspective of this practical guide and reference helpful in finding solutions to many key industry problems. It also can serve as a coursebook for graduate and advanced undergraduate students.
