Synopsis Mathematics and Life Sciences by : Alexandra V. Antoniouk
The book provides a unique collection of in-depth mathematical, statistical, and modeling methods and techniques for life sciences, as well as their applications in a number of areas within life sciences. The book provides also with a range of new ideas that represent emerging frontiers in life sciences where the application of such quantitative methods and techniques is becoming increasingly important. Many areas within life sciences are becoming increasingly quantitative and the progress in those areas will be more and more dependent on the successful development of advanced mathematical, statistical and modelling methodologies and techniques. The state-of-the-art developments in such methodologies and techniques are scattered throughout research journals and hardly accessible to the practitioners in those areas. This book identifies a number of frontier areas where such methodologies and techniques have recently been developed and are to be published here for the first time, bringing substantial potential benefit to a range of applications in life sciences. In addition, the book contains several state-of-the-art surveys at the interface of mathematics and life sciences that would benefit a larger interdisciplinary community. It is aimed at researchers in academia, practitioners and graduate students who want to foster interdisciplinary collaborations required to meet the challenges at the interface of modern life sciences and mathematics.

Synopsis Lahita's Systemic Lupus Erythematosus by : Robert G. Lahita
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), commonly called lupus, is a chronic autoimmune disorder that can affect virtually any organ of the body. In lupus, the body's immune system, which normally functions to protect against foreign invaders, becomes hyperactive, forming antibodies that attack normal tissues and organs, including the skin, joints, kidneys, brain, heart, lungs, and blood. Lupus is characterized by periods of illness, called flares, and periods of wellness or remission. Because its symptoms come and go and mimic those of other diseases, lupus is difficult to diagnose. There is no single laboratory test that can definitively prove that a person has the complex illness. To date, lupus has no known cause or cure. Early detection and treatment are the key to a better health outcome and can usually lessen the progression and severity of the disease. Anti-inflammatory drugs, antimalarials, and steroids (such as cortisone and others) are often used to treat lupus. Cytotoxic chemotherapies, like those used in the treatment of cancer, are also used to suppress the immune system in lupus patients. A new edition of this established and well-regarded reference combines basic science with clinical science to provide a translational medicine model. Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Sixth Edition, is a useful reference for specialists in the diagnosis and management of patients with SLE, a tool for measurement of clinical activity for pharmaceutical development and basic research of the disease, and a reference work for hospital libraries. - Completely updated, revised, and expanded with the most comprehensive and accessible reference on SLE for clinicians and scientists - Full-color presentation throughout the book - Provides the latest information available on diagnosis and treatment - Incorporates an international panel of authors who are experts in their fields, with an emphasis on young, cutting-edge scientists and physicians

Synopsis Post-transcriptional Processing and the Endocrine System by : Shern L. Chew
Not much research has been done on the regulation of post-transcriptional events, much more is known about transcription. This book illustrates how hormones may influence post-transcriptional nuclear events and that some post-transcriptional modification is a requirement for the expression and function of most higher eukaryotic genes. Topics such as the regulation of pre-mRNA splicing by hormonal signals and tissue-specific mechanisms, pre-mRNA processing during spermatogenesis, to the link between the cell cycle and splicing, the role of phosphorylation and dephosphorylation in the function of the basal splicing machinery, RNA editing, the neuroendocrine regulation of polyadenylation all contribute to make up this volume. If you are an endocrinologist searching for interesting and important answers unearthed by RNA experiments, this book provides them.

Synopsis Characterisation of Ferroelectric Bulk Materials and Thin Films by : Markys G. Cain
This book presents a comprehensive review of the most important methods used in the characterisation of piezoelectric, ferroelectric and pyroelectric materials. It covers techniques for the analysis of bulk materials and thick and thin film materials and devices. There is a growing demand by industry to adapt and integrate piezoelectric materials into ever smaller devices and structures. Such applications development requires the joint development of reliable, robust, accurate and – most importantly – relevant and applicable measurement and characterisation methods and models. In the past few years there has been a rapid development of new techniques to model and measure the variety of properties that are deemed important for applications development engineers and scientists. The book has been written by the leaders in the field and many chapters represent established measurement best practice, with a strong emphasis on application of the methods via worked examples and detailed experimental procedural descriptions. Each chapter contains numerous diagrams, images, and measurement data, all of which are fully referenced and indexed. The book is intended to occupy space in the research or technical lab, and will be a valuable and practical resource for students, materials scientists, engineers, and lab technicians.

Synopsis Index to Vital Data in Local Newspapers of Sonoma County, California, Volume 12: 1919-1921 by : Sonoma County Genealogical Society
The indexing of Sonoma County newspapers was undertaken to help fill in the gaps in some of the early records in Sonoma County. The first volume, which covers the period from 1854 through 1875 was published early in 2001. Ten additional volumes have been published covering the period through 1918. The present volume contains an index of surnames found in those papers published in Sonoma County between 1919 and 1921 and contains more than 13,900 entries. Some of the entries include residents from the surrounding counties of Marin, Napa, Solano, Lake, and Mendocino.
