This open access book is the first to systematically introduce the principles of urban informatics and its application to every aspect of the city that involves its functioning, control, management, and future planning. It introduces new models and tools being developed to understand and implement these technologies that enable cities to function more efficiently – to become ‘smart’ and ‘sustainable’. The smart city has quickly emerged as computers have become ever smaller to the point where they can be embedded into the very fabric of the city, as well as being central to new ways in which the population can communicate and act. World-wide trends such as globalization, demographic shifts, increased customer demands, and shorter product lifecycles present a significant challenge to the road freight transport industry: meeting the growing road freight transport demand economically while striving for sustainability. Artificial intelligence, particularly machine learning, is expected to empower transport planners to incorporate more information and react quicker to the fast-changing decision environment. Hence, using machine learning can lead to more efficient and effective transport planning. However, despite the promising prospects of machine learning in road freight transport planning, both academia and industry struggle to identify and implement suitable use cases to gain a competitive edge. In her dissertation, Sandra Lechtenberg explores how machine learning can enhance decision-making in operational and real-time road freight transport planning. She outlines an implementation guideline, which involves identifying decision tasks in planning processes, assessing their suitability for machine learning, and proposing steps to follow when implementing respective algorithms.

Since 2007, the biennial International Conferences on Dynamics in Logistics (LDIC) offers researchersand practitioners from logistics, operations research, production, industrial and electrical engineering aswell as from computer science an opportunity to meet and to discuss the latest developments in thisparticular research domain. From February 23th to 25th 2022 for the eighth time, LDIC 2022 was held inBremen, Germany. Similar to its seven predecessors, the Bremen Research Cluster for Dynamics inLogistics (LogDynamics) organized this conference. The spectrum of topics reaches from the dynamicmodeling, planning and control of processes over supply chain management and maritime logistics toinnovative technologies and robotic applications for cyber-physical production and logistics systems.LDIC 2022 provided a forum for the discussion of advances in that matter. The conference programconsisted of keynote speeches and research papers selected by a severe double-blind reviewing process.Within these proceedings all the papers are published. By this, the proceedings give an interdisciplinaryoutline on the state of the art of dynamics in logistics as well as identify challenges and solutions forlogistics today and tomorrow.

Abstract: This empirical paper sheds light on a significant element of the debate of whether infrastructure services have a strong impact on economic development by exploring the impact of innovative road freight services on downstream business users. The paper uses a new and purpose-specific survey of 165 logistics service providers and 493 user enterprises in food processing, food distribution, and the automotive industry in the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Poland. The main findings are that there are substantial downstream benefits from innovations in road freight services, both dampening cost increases and raising sales revenues of business users. The additional finding that increased intensity of competition in road freight services is significantly associated with the provision of innovative services suggests that easing any remaining barriers to competition in upstream business sectors should be a priority.

Due to COVID-19 pandemic the conference was held virtually. The 42 full papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 111 submissions. They detail the interface of complex logistics systems and advanced computational methods from the fields of operations research, business analytics, and artificial intelligence. In Spain, as in most countries, the real obstacle to effective and efficient delivery of key infrastructure is not the availability of finance, but rather problems of governance. This review examines the transport infrastructure governance framework in Spain against OECD good practices. It identifies the main governance bottlenecks for the development of transport infrastructure projects and provides a comparison with what other countries have done to alleviate similar bottlenecks.
