Synopsis They of the High Trails (Classic Reprint) by : Hamlin Garland
Excerpt from They of the High Trails M am Travelled Roads was composed, for the reason that I went to the High Country as to a summer playground. If a little of this joyousness of spirit inheres in the following pages, I am content to have it so, for the later mood is precisely as authentic as the other. The writing of the book was mainly done during 1905 and 1910. That I am less the reformer, less militant in this volume, I cheerfully admit. To maintain such a mood as that in which my first books were written after the conditions of its genesis had changed, would have been false and foolish. From the heat and dust and toil of the plain I went year after year to the glorious streams of the lofty valleys where only horsemen lived, men who took chances every day, and whose women, lonely though they were, had at least the compensation of the never-ending drama of cloud and peak. It was a recreation to ride these trails. I did not search for material - it came to me. I took delight in writing these stories and many readers have testified that they, too, enjoyed them. I glory in them and I am asking my readers to put them on the shelf along with the two volumes of M am Travelled Roads, as a complementary volume. I assure them that in all my tales of the mountains I worked in the same spirit of verity as that with which I earlier wrote. My material is more romantic in these later books, but my method remains substantially the same. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Synopsis Hiking Washington's History by : Judy Bentley
For thousands of years people have traveled across Washington’s spectacular terrain, establishing footpaths and roads to reach hunting grounds and coal mines high in the mountains, fishing sites and trade emporiums on the rivers, forests of old growth, and homesteads and towns on prairies. These traditional routes have been preserved in national parks, restored by cities and towns, salvaged from old railroad tracks, and opened to hikers by Indigenous communities. In this new, full-color edition of the first-ever hiking guide to the state’s historic trails, historian and hiker Judy Bentley teams up with veteran guidebook author Craig Romano to lead adventurers of all abilities along trails on the coast, over mountains, through national forests, across plateaus, and on the banks of the Columbia River. Features include: • 44 hikes, including 12 new additions • Full-color trail maps • A trails timeline that connects hikes to key events • Updated trail descriptions • Accounts from diaries, journals, and archives • Historical overviews of 8 regions of the state • Contemporary and historical photographs Bentley and Romano offer an essential boots-on-the ground history of some of the state’s most fascinating places.

Synopsis Vacation on the Trail by : Eugene Davenport
Excerpt from Vacation on the Trail: Personal Experiences in the Higher Mountain Trails With Complete Directions for the Outfitting of Inexpensive Expeditions Frankly the following pages are written in the hope Of interesting the thousands Of men and women who go summering every year in search of that which will te lieve from the strain Of Office, study, or classroom and send them back refreshed for the labors of another year. The aim is to point out a more excellent way than has yet been discovered by the vast majority who perforce follow the crowd to the popular resort or at best join an excursion and do half a continent in thirty days. What the worn-out teacher, clerk, or executive needs is not rest but change; not inactivity which dulls the physical powers but action which stimulates; not mental excitement, Of which he has had too much, but simple surroundings under his personal control. He needs some thing that will set his idle body at work and stir up his sluggish processes, especially those Of elimination; and yet that something must be so filled with daily details as effectually to prevent the mind from slipping back into its Old ruts to go wool-gathering after the deep things Of life. In short, the man or woman seeking recuperation needs to reverse the daily grind and live a life Of active, though not exhaustive, physical existence with enough Of variety to keep the mind interested but not really em ployed. SO shall the tired vacationist go back to his work te-created and virtually a new man in body, mind, and spirit. Synopsis Trails of the Angeles by : John Robinson
The rugged San Gabriel Mountains, rising starkly from the edge of the Los Angeles Basin, provide a sharp contrast to the hustle and bustle of the city and its surroundings. Angelinos across the county (a population of almost 10 million), as well as visitors from out of state, welcome the opportunity to escape from city chaos into the quiet wilderness. This 9th edition of the classic Wilderness Press guide has been revised and updated to reflect recent trail changes, and now includes trips in the Fish Canyon Narrows, along Alder Creek, and to Jones Peak, as well as perennial favorites such as Old Baldy, Mt. Wilson, and Devils Punchbowl. Each detailed trip description notes the distance, difficulty, and ideal season, and points out the highlights of the trail. The guide includes a companion 4-color waterproof topo map.

Synopsis Tales of the Porcupine Trails (Classic Reprint) by : W. Milton Yorke
Excerpt from Tales of the Porcupine Trails For the northern wilderness conquered, High praise and all honor to you. Sages shall sing of thy glory, When cycles of time have sped, And child lips babble the story O'er the unmarked graves of the dead, When time shall have vanquished our land. Marks, Through forest, by storm-riven shore, And the herald of light gives warning That the northern night is o'er. Herald of light and gladness, Herald of progress and peace, Take from our hearts the sadness. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Synopsis Trails to Two Moons (Classic Reprint) by : Robert Welles Ritchie
Excerpt from Trails to Two Moons Original Bill's life was one of variety; it was ebullient and replete with unpremeditated climaxes. Withal, the life of his choosing. He was of the cattle clan, born to it in that day when every youth in Texas looked forward to riding the trail with the longhorns, just the Gloucester and New Bedford boy of the heroic age of sail looked through schoolhouse windows to high harbor spars. The chivalry of the cattle clan had been bred in him by long hours on night herd, by the harrowing moments of stampede in a thunderstorm, the rollicking fellowship of the round-up.
