Synopsis Blazes, Posts & Stones by : James Leonard Williams

A culmination of decades of research on field notes, plats, correspondence, legislation, and observations of surveyors, cartographers, government officials, military commanders, Native Americans, early settlers, and land speculators, this volume is the first of its kind in nearly a century. Interweaving the history of Ohio and biographies of the individuals associated with surveying and mapping, Blazes, Posts and Stones is a must-read book about the nonsequential development of Ohio lands and its subdivisions. The book is complete with maps and figures and provides technical descriptions of them. An excellent resource for county engineers, but also for those who have an interest in Ohio history.

Synopsis Unearthing the Land by : Thomas A. Rumer

"A much-publicized labor strike erupted during the broiling, violent summer of 1934, breaking the monotony of field work for that season. But the marsh had already begun showing the signs of exploitation - the rich organic soil was evaporating in astounding, incalculable tonnage. Once as deep as a tall pioneer, the muck was now little more than a foot thick.".

This important publication identifies the 1,000 associates of the Ohio Company who purchased lands on the Muskingum River, 1788-1792, with such information, in tabular form, as residence, selling agency, and number of shares owned. Additionally there is a two-page list of the ""French Inhabitants and Actual Settlers of the Town of Gallipolis"" in 1795. Prefixed to the work is an extensive essay tracing the history of the ""Crown Lands"" and the settlement of Ohio and also listing the purchasers of lots in the counties of Columbiana, Jefferson, Munroe, and Belmont, giving the number of the lot, acreage, price, and political division. First Ownership of Ohio Lands was originally published in serial form in the pages of The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Volumes 64 and 65, and reprinted in book form in 1911.

Synopsis Early Ohio Settlers by :

This work presents, in an easy-to-use tabular format, a complete list of the 25,000 persons who bought land in southwestern Ohio and eastern Indiana through the Cincinnati Land Office between the years 1800 and 1840. Data furnished with each entry includes the name of the purchaser, date of purchase, place of residence at the time of purchase, and the range, township, and section of the purchased land, thus enabling the researcher to ascertain the exact location of an ancestor's land. Previously, in locating a settler in southwestern Ohio, the researcher was obliged to spend hours if not days searching through numerous volumes of unindexed land records, but with this volume the task is reduced to seconds.
