Synopsis The System of Objects by : Jean Baudrillard
The System of Objects is a tour de force—a theoretical letter-in-a-bottle tossed into the ocean in 1968, which brilliantly communicates to us all the live ideas of the day. Pressing Freudian and Saussurean categories into the service of a basically Marxist perspective, The System of Objects offers a cultural critique of the commodity in consumer society. Baudrillard classifies the everyday objects of the “new technical order” as functional, nonfunctional and metafunctional. He contrasts “modern” and “traditional” functional objects, subjecting home furnishing and interior design to a celebrated semiological analysis. His treatment of nonfunctional or “marginal” objects focuses on antiques and the psychology of collecting, while the metafunctional category extends to the useless, the aberrant and even the “schizofunctional.” Finally, Baudrillard deals at length with the implications of credit and advertising for the commodification of everyday life. The System of Objects is a tour de force of the materialist semiotics of the early Baudrillard, who emerges in retrospect as something of a lightning rod for all the live ideas of the day: Bataille’s political economy of “expenditure” and Mauss’s theory of the gift; Reisman’s lonely crowd and the “technological society” of Jacques Ellul; the structuralism of Roland Barthes in The System of Fashion; Henri Lefebvre’s work on the social construction of space; and last, but not least, Guy Debord’s situationist critique of the spectacle.

Synopsis Object-Process Methodology by : Dov Dori
Object-Process Methodology (OPM) is an intuitive approach to systems engineering. This book presents the theory and practice of OPM with examples from various industry segments and engineering disciplines, as well as daily life. OPM is a generic, domain independent approach that is applicable almost anywhere in systems engineering.

Synopsis Systems Analysis and Design and the Transition to Objects by : Sandra Donaldson Dewitz
Emphasizing object-oriented design, this text covers traditional analysis and design paradigms. It stresses learn-by-doing with the concepts supported by a case study, exercises, and a companion Project Workbook. The projects in the workbook are based on the use of a CASE tool. The coverage includes topics, such as RAD, JAD, and Client/Server.

Synopsis Objects and Databases by : Klaus R. Dittrich
These post-proceedings contain the revised versions of the papers presented at the \Symposium on Objects and Databases" which was held in Sophia-Antipolis, France, June 13, 2000, in conjunction with the Fourteenth European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming, ECOOP 2000. This event continued the t- dition established the year before in Lisbon (Portugal) with the First Workshop on Object-Oriented Databases. The goal of the symposium was to bring together researchers working in various corners of the eld of objects and databases, to discuss the current state of research in the eld and to critically evaluate existing solutions in terms of their current usage, their successes and limitations, and their potential for new applications. The organizing committee received 21 papers which were reviewed by a p- gram committee of people active in the eld of objects and databases. There were 3 reviews for each paper, and nally the organizing committee selected 9 long papers, 2 short papers, and a demonstration to be presented and discussed at the symposium. The selected papers cover a wide spectrum of topics, including data modeling concepts, persistent object languages, consistency and integrity of persistent data, storage structures, class versioning and schema evolution, query languages, and temporal object-oriented databases. In addition to the regular papers, the symposium included an invited p- sentation, given by Prof. Malcolm Atkinson from the University of Glasgow (Scotland) where he heads the Persistence and Distribution Group.

Synopsis Objects, Agents, and Features by : Mark Ryan
In recent years, concepts in object-oriented modeling and programming have been extended in several directions, giving rise to new paradigms such as age- orientation and feature-orientation. This volume came out of a Dagstuhl seminar exploring the relationship - tween the original paradigm and the two new ones. Following the success of the seminar, the idea emerged to edit a volume with contributions from parti- pants - including those who were invited but could not come. The participants' reaction was very positive, and so we, the organizers of the seminar, felt - couraged to edit this volume. All submissions were properly refereed, resulting in the present selection of high-quality papers in between the topics of objects, agents and features. The editors got help from a number of additional reviewers, viz. Peter Ahlbrecht, Daniel Amyot, Lynne Blair, Jan Broersen, Mehdi Dastani, Virginia Dignum, Dimitar Guelev, Benjamin Hirsch, Maik Kollmann, Alice Miller, Stephan Rei?-Marganiec, Javier Vazquez-Salceda, and Gerard Vreeswijk. Finally, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all the persons - volvedintherealizationoftheseminarandthisbook:attendees,authors,revi- ers, and, last but not least, the sta? from Schloss Dagstuhl and Springer-Verlag.
