Synopsis Byzantium Viewed by the Arabs by : Nadia Maria El-Cheikh
This book studies the Arabic-Islamic view of Byzantium, tracing the Byzantine image as it evolved through centuries of warfare, contact, and exchanges. Including previously inaccessible material on the Arabic textual tradition on Byzantium, this investigation shows the significance of Byzantium to the Arab Muslim establishment and their appreciation of various facets of Byzantine culture and civilization. The Arabic-Islamic representation of the Byzantine Empire stretching from the reference to Byzantium in the Qur'an until the fall of Constantinople in 1453 is considered in terms of a few salient themes. The image of Byzantium reveals itself to be complex, non-monolithic, and self-referential. Formulating an alternative appreciation to the politics of confrontation and hostility that so often underlies scholarly discourse on Muslim-Byzantine relations, this book presents the schemes developed by medieval authors to reinterpret aspects of their own history, their own self-definition, and their own view of the world.

Synopsis A History of the Byzantine State and Society by : Warren Treadgold
“A vivid story of Byzantium’s existence over the span of 1,100 years . . . . this work may well become the standard English-language history of Byzantium.” —Library Journal This is the first comprehensive and up-to-date history of Byzantium to appear in almost sixty years, and the first ever to cover both the Byzantine state and Byzantine society. It begins in A.D. 285, when the emperor Diocletian separated what became Byzantium from the western Roman Empire, and ends in 1461, when the last Byzantine outposts fell to the Ottoman Turks. Spanning twelve centuries and three continents, the Byzantine Empire linked the ancient and modern worlds, shaping and transmitting Greek, Roman, and Christian traditions—including the Greek classics, Roman law, and Christian theology—that remain vigorous today, not only in Eastern Europe and the Middle East but throughout Western civilization. Though in its politics Byzantium often resembled a third-world dictatorship, it has never yet been matched in maintaining a single state for so long, over a wide area inhabited by heterogeneous peoples. Drawing on a wealth of original sources and modern works, the author treats political and social developments as a single vivid story, told partly in detailed narrative and partly in essays that clarify long-term changes. He avoids stereotypes and rejects such old and new historical orthodoxies as the persistent weakness of the Byzantine economy and the pervasive importance of holy men in Late Antiquity. Without neglecting underlying social, cultural, and economic trends, the author shows the often-crucial impact of nearly a hundred Byzantine emperors and empresses. What the emperor or empress did, or did not do, could rapidly confront ordinary Byzantines with economic ruin, new religious doctrines, or conquest by a foreign power. Much attention is also paid to the complex life of the court and bureaucracy that has given us the adjective “byzantine.” The major personalities include such famous names as Constantine, Justinian, Theodora, and Heraclius, along with lesser-known figures like Constans II, Irene, Basil II the Bulgar-Slayer, and Michael VIII Palaeologus. Byzantine civilization emerges as durable, creative, and realistic, overcoming repeated setbacks to remain prosperous almost to the end. With 221 illustrations and 18 maps, A History of the Byzantine State and Society should long remain the standard history of Byzantium not just for students and scholars but for all readers. “Fluently written for the general reader.” —Los Angeles Times Book Review “Though several others have recently assayed to cover the complex history of the Eastern Roman Empire . . . none has done so as completely and satisfactorily as Treadgold.” —Libraries & Culture

Synopsis The Autobiography of Time by : Neil Ray
When 9/11 occurred in front of Author's eyes in New York City, like millions of others he was tormented. Looking at the burning towers with unbearable pain and agony - a simple question struck him – why on earth are we in this crossroad of civilization? Although at that point it had started as an aimless query, later after 16 years of diligent research, he crystalized his thoughts, gaining a much broader perspective and inner-wisdom. In turn, it gave birth to his Magnus Opus - this book The Autobiography of Time. 11/5/20 It’s a non-fiction novel based on world history. Time is the storyteller in this book, who narrates the saga of mankind to his son Beta; the events that Time has eye-witnessed – from Big Bang up to the end of Iraq War in 2011. Poring through the chapters, it precipitates both regressive and progressive pasts with latent emotions, and hopes to bring to surface the cause and effect of human actions - so that future generations can celebrate the state of true civilization. As the curtain is raised not on any particular event, country or region; the stage is set on all that occurred concurrently in different parts of the planet; the events those are of import to civilization as we know - thus lending a flavor of every period to the readers, as it moves from one epoch to another. It’s an epic with a purpose. This book covers mankind’s achievements, moments of glory and sheer good fortune, his innovations and exploration. It revives from oblivion very real anecdotes about key historical personalities. It is based on true stories that had transpired in the past and have shaped this planet – as we see it today. It’s truly The Saga of Human Civilization; Ambition, Greed and Power from the dawn of man.
