Synopsis Popular Culture in London C.1890-1918 by : Andrew Horrall

Reg Prentice remains the most high-profile politician to cross the floor of the House of Commons in the post-war period. His defection reflected an important 'sea change' in British politics; the end of the post-war consensus and the beginnings of the Thatcher era. This book examines the key events surrounding Prentice's transition from a front-line Labour politician to a Conservative minister in the first Thatcher government. It focuses on the shifting political climate in Britain during the 1970s, as the post-war settlement came under pressure from adverse economic conditions, militant trade unionism and an assertive New Left. Prentice's story provides an important case study on the crisis that afflicted social democracy, highlighting Labour's left-right divide and the possibility of a realignment of British politics. This study will be invaluable to anyone interested in the turbulent and transitional nature of British politics during a watershed period.

Synopsis Mendelssohn and Victorian England by : ColinTimothy Eatock

This valuable book considers the reception of the composer, pianist, organist and conductor Felix Mendelssohn in nineteenth-century England, and his influence on English musical culture. Despite the composer's immense popularity in the nation during his lifetime and in the decades following his death, this is the first book to deal exclusively with the subject of Mendelssohn in England. Mendelssohn's highly successful ten trips to Britain, between 1829 and 1847, are documented and discussed in detail, as are his relationships with English musicians and a variety of prominent figures. An introductory chapter describes the musical life of England (especially London) at the time of Mendelssohn's arrival and the last two chapters deal with the composer's posthumous reception, to the end of the Victorian era. Eatock reveals Mendelssohn as a catalyst for the expansion of English musical culture in the nineteenth century. In taking this position, the author challenges much of the extant literature on the subject and provides an engaging story that brings Mendelssohn and his English experiences to life.

Synopsis Two Centuries of British Symphonism by : Jürgen Schaarwächter

Only in relatively recent times has any real attention been given to British symphonies. So a comprehensive survey, showing what exists and how the situation in the United Kingdom developed, from the beginnings in the 18th century until well into the 20th century, is long overdue. The preliminary survey presented here shows how a British symphonic identity gradually took shape over more than a century, through influences from abroad and, at home, enterprising attempts to find new ways of expression. By the end of the 19th century, British symphonists had produced an impressive body of work, yet only with the appearance of Elgar’s two symphonies in the following decade did this flourishing school find a champion of international renown. In this publication, light is shone on those works that have to some extent been overshadowed, as well as on those that have remained unpublished or unperformed. The result is a multi-faceted panorama of British symphonism, offering many insights into the composers’ thinking and their socio-cultural contexts. A comprehensive catalogue of all known works and an extensive bibliography invite readers to delve further into the subject.

Synopsis Light Music in Britain since 1870: A Survey by : Geoffrey Self

In many ways the history of British light music knits together the social and economic history of the country with that of its general musical heritage. Numerous 'serious' composers from Elgar to Britten composed light music, and the genre adapted itself to incorporate the changing fashions heralded by the rise and fall of music hall, the drawing room ballad, ragtime, jazz and the revue. From the 1950s the recording and broadcasting industries provided a new home for light music as an accompaniment to radio programmes and films. Geoffrey Self deftly handles a wealth of information to illustrate the immense role that light music has played in British culture over the last 130 years. His insightful assessments of the best and the most shameful examples of the genre help to pinpoint its enduring qualities; qualities which enable it to maintain a presence in the face of today's domination by commercial popular music.

Synopsis Mozart by : Brien Masters

When he was first introduced to the idea that human consciousness has been evolving over the centuries and millennia, Brien Masters discovered the possibility of gaining insight into this phenomenon by examining the musical styles of various classical composers. Following years of musical study and practice, in Mozart's music he detected a reflection of humanity's emerging consciousness of selfhood and individuality. Two hundred and fifty years after his birth, Mozart continues to be acknowledged universally as a musical genius. Recognition of his work, however, goes beyond the pleasure we derive from listening to his music. In the 1990s, psychologists discovered the so-called Mozart Effect, the notion that listening to Mozart enhances mental capacities and even health. In this study, the author considers Mozart in relation to the evolution of human consciousness. Could Mozart's music affect changes in human makeup? Masters studies Mozart's musical style and considers the nature of the human "I." By analyzing Mozart's compositions, the author shows how the principles of the "I" are particularly evident his music. Masters tells us that his book may be read as his attempt to "describe the self's journey toward the richness of Mozart's musical style [and] to shed Mozartean light onto the self as the central element in the human constitution. The former perspective is a comment on the significance of his genius appearing in the second half of the eighteenth century. The latter has relevance, among other things, for the debate on and understanding of the so-called Mozart Effect today." Relevant musical scores are included for those who wish to study the relevant pieces in greater detail.
