Après Paramaribo en 1998 et la Havane en 1999, Cayenne a accueilli la conférence annuelle de l'Association des Historiens de la Caraïbe (AHC) du 16 au 20 avril 2000. L'AHC regroupe des historiens du bassin de la Caraïbe ainsi que des membres venant des universités et des organismes de recherche des Etats-Unis, du Canada, du Mexique, du Venezuela et du Brésil et de certaines universités de l'Union Européenne. Les trente-deux communications présentées ont été regroupées dans cet ouvrage. Un nombre significatif de communications a été consacré aux problématiques de l'histoire de la Guyane, le pays d'accueil. Dix intervenants ont ainsi traité des questions du peuplement et de la mise en valeur coloniale de la Guyane, des réactions politiques et identitaires liées à la pratique française de l'assimilation. Les questions abordées par ailleurs ont été rassemblées, dans les langues des intervenants, autour des thèmes suivants : criminalité et châtiments dans la Caraïbe ; la question de la nationalité aux Antilles françaises ; le traitement de l'environnement; la Caraïbe vue du Mexique; relations internationales et historiographie ; migrations transatlantiques et questions identitaires dans la Caraïbe britannique ; division sexuelle du travail et représentation de la sexualité. En dépit de l'obstacle linguistique que pourraient rencontrer certains lecteurs, les textes rassemblées ici donnent de la Caraïbe un éclairage diversifié rarement disponible dans les lieux accueillant le grand public

This bilingual collection illustrates the concept of the 'Warrior of the Imaginary', as defined by Patrick Chamoiseau, in a multi-faceted corpus of texts. Francophone contributions explore the role of the Caribbean writer in works by Chamoiseau, Édouard Glissant, Daniel Maximin, and Joseph Zobel. Essays in English focus not only on familiar writers (Dionne Brand, Edwidge Danticat, Wilson Harris, Jamaica Kincaid, Caryl Phillips, Derek Walcott) but also on less widely studied voices (Robert Antoni, Albert Helman). Other contributions deal with such 'fighting areas' as Afro-Brazilian music, film, and Mutabaruka's militant poetry. The whole testifies to a surprisingly coherent imaginary, one that goes beyond the 'balkanization' of the Caribbean archipelago. Dans ce collectif bilingue, le concept de 'Guerrier de l'imaginaire' tel que défini par Patrick Chamoiseau est illustré par un corpus de textes variés. Plusieurs des articles en français engagent directement le cycle romanesque de l'auteur martiniquais, d'autres étendent l'interrogation de la fonction de l'auteur caribéen à l'écriture glissantienne, maximinienne et zobélienne. Études en anglais portent sur des écrivains dont le renom n'est plus à faire (Dionne Brand, Edwidge Danticat, Wilson Harris, Jamaica Kincaid, Caryl Phillips, Derek Walcott) mais donnent aussi la parole à des auteurs jusqu'à présent moins étudiés (Robert Antoni, Albert Helman). Enfin, quelques-unes des contributions portent sur d'autres 'terrains de lutte', comme la musique afro-brésilienne, le cinéma, ou la poésie militante de Mutabaruka. L'ensemble témoigne d'un imaginaire étonnamment confluant, au-delà de la 'balkanisation' de l'archipel caribéen.

The book presents a movement from a European construction of Caribbean identity towards a more Caribbean construction. This book on Guillaume Coppier (1606 1674), the early 17th-century French traveler, indentured servant, colonist, mariner, moralist, baroque chronicler, antiquarian, humanist, sometime pirate and slaver of sorts, is essentially a reading of Coppier, the man and his chronicle. Coppiers Histoire et voyage des Indes Occidentales, et de plusieurs autres rgions maritimes, & esloignes (History and Voyage to the West Indies and to Several Other Maritime and Faraway Regions) was published in Lyon in 1645. Given its objective and context, this effortpart amateur historiography and translation and part novice commentary and interpretationis also a survey of past appraisals of Coppiers chronicle. Like all such endeavors, this essay informs on the essayist; it is a sort of voyage, and a long one at that.

This collection of essays focuses on the notion of the ‘mark’, through its manifold dimensions, including heritage, race, genes, stereotypes, traumas and scars, in order to tackle contemporary phenomena and issues such as identity, queerness, emancipation and heritage. It does so by channelling reflections through a variety of art forms, including visual art, performance, cinema, distillery, and literature. Hybrid in its approaches, this collection gathers together self-portraits, analytical essays, and ethnographies to discuss self-determination at a crossroads between intimacy and geopolitics throughout postcolonial France and the French Caribbean.

I then compare Cesaire's Caribbean "shape" to that of Rene Depestre, and a quite different model emerges. I find that Africa is relatively absent in Depestre's work: Europe is not presented as a threat; and that Depestre, unlike Cesaire, sees, in the Caribbean, an energy and a creativity brought about by the historical fusion of disparate cultures. I consider how the reality of Depestre's long exile from the Caribbean has affected his views of the islands.

Volume6 looks at the ways historians have written the history of the region depending upon their methods of interpretation and differing styles of communicating their findings. The authors examine how the lingual diversity of the region has affected the historian's ability to coalesce an historical account. The second half of the volume describes the writing of history in the individual territories, taking into account changes in society, economy and political structure. This volume concludes with a detailed bibliography that is comprehensive of the entire series.
