Dutch Racism is the first comprehensive study of its kind. The approach is unique, not comparative but relational, in unraveling the legacy of racism in the Netherlands and the (former) colonies. Authors contribute to identifying the complex ways in which racism operates in and beyond the national borders, shaped by European and global influences, and intersecting with other systems of domination. Contrary to common sense beliefs it appears that old-fashioned biological notions of “race” never disappeared. At the same time the Netherlands echoes, if not leads, a wider European trend, where offensive statements about Muslims are an everyday phenomenon. This book deals with the international law concerning overseas territories and the right of such territories to choose another relationship with their mother country. Many examples are studied, such as the British, French, American, Danish and New Zealand territories. May such islands choose to become independent, or to become an integral part of the mother country? Do they have the freedom to determine their own political status, to act on the international scene? The case of the Dutch territories in the Caribbean is dealt with in more detail, specifically their constitutional relationship to the Netherlands and the European Union. Through comparison of the different solutions that other states have chosen, a number of best practices are identified

First Published in 1990. This volume of essays on the Dutch Caribbean considers areas that are of increasing importance on the international scene and on which little has been written. The Dutch Caribbean shares many of the features of the French-, Spanish- and English-speaking Caribbean. Like these other linguistic zones, the Dutch Caribbean emerged from a history of slavery and colonialism with economies rooted in, or characterized by, the plantation system.

The former Dutch Caribbean islands of the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba are going through a complex and, in many ways, difficult phase of their development. This book aims to survey and stimulate relevant social science research on the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba.

Today about 85 per cent of the world population of Muslims live in areas outside the Arab world, and due to population growth, missionary endeavours and migration, the number of Muslims in these areas is rising rapidly. This volume presents the spread and character of Islam in many non-Arab countries, focusing particularly on the contemporary situation. The book deals with the great variety and complexity that characterize Islam outside the Arab world, with Sufism (the predominant form of Islam in most non-Arab Muslim countries), and with the growing significance of Islamism which challenges secularism and Sufi forms of Islam.

As an overseas department of France, Guadeloupe is one of a handful of non-independent societies in the Caribbean that seem like political exceptions—or even paradoxes—in our current postcolonial era. In Non-Sovereign Futures, Yarimar Bonilla wrestles with the conceptual arsenal of political modernity—challenging contemporary notions of freedom, sovereignty, nationalism, and revolution—in order to recast Guadeloupe not as a problematically non-sovereign site but as a place that can unsettle how we think of sovereignty itself. Through a deep ethnography of Guadeloupean labor activism, Bonilla examines how Caribbean political actors navigate the conflicting norms and desires produced by the modernist project of postcolonial sovereignty. Exploring the political and historical imaginaries of activist communities, she examines their attempts to forge new visions for the future by reconfiguring narratives of the past, especially the histories of colonialism and slavery. Drawing from nearly a decade of ethnographic research, she shows that political participation—even in failed movements—has social impacts beyond simple material or economic gains. Ultimately, she uses the cases of Guadeloupe and the Caribbean at large to offer a more sophisticated conception of the possibilities of sovereignty in the postcolonial era.
