Synopsis Just How It Was by : Jim Blagg

My son Jeff was looking for anything pertaining to my ship, USS Polaris, on the Internet. He came across Korean War Veterans. Then, he picked out “Navy”, and then “Ship reunions.” I didn’t know until 1999 that the Polaris held a reunion each year. It’s not a large group, but we’ve bonded like family. We look forward to meeting for the reunion held each year in a different U.S. city. In this group, I want to give special thanks to “Bill” Scott and Lee Nunez for the hours they put into keeping these reunions running smoothly. Anyone who served aboard the Polaris, World War II through its 1957 when it was decommissioned, is welcomed to our reunion. http://usspolarisaf11.us Sayonara to all the little farms with their neat, little vegetable gardens and rice patties, the familiar “chug-chug” of the fishing boats, the tunes of “China Night” and “Kum-Kum Monsume,” and the shy, little children who don’t know what to make of Americans. Sayonara to the beautiful scenery created by trees with their lacy leaves in different shades of green, and the light, drifting snow flurries in winter.

Synopsis Just How Stupid Are We? by : Rick Shenkman

Fifty percent of Americans can name four characters from aaC--AThe Simpsons, aaC--Au but only two out of five can name all three branches of the federal government. No more than one in seven can find Iraq on a map. Just how stupid are we? Pretty stupid. In Just How Stupid Are We?, best-selling author Rick Shenkman takes aim at our great national piety: the wisdom of the American people. American democracy is as direct as it's ever beenaaC--but voters are misusing, abusing, and abdicating their political power. At once a powerful indictment of voter apathy and political indifference, Just How Stupid Are We? also provides concrete proposals for reforming our institutionsaaC--the government, the media, civic organizations, political partiesaaC--to make them work better for the American people. But first, Shenkman argues, we must reform ourselves

Synopsis Just How Do Affirmations Work? by : May Sinclair

So you've read "The Secret," but your life is pretty much the same. Your thoughts on abundance didn't improve that crummy job; in fact, the amount of tedious work you had to do increased. You thank your coffee every morning, and now you drink more of it rather than need it less. Years after reading Deepak Chopra's "The Seven Spiritual Laws," you can't remember anything about the laws of intent -- only that it's important to bring a flower to the host when attending a dinner party. You tried meditating, but mostly just fell asleep. Oh, and yes, all you learned from Louise Hay's "You Can Heal Your Life" was that your sinus headaches are caused by your irritation with all those crazy people close to you. Humph. Are you ready to "really" understand how those spiritual laws work? Then let's take it to the next level. About the Author May Sinclair earned her doctorate in the philosophy of metaphysics soon after her fiftieth birthday. An award-winning and internationally acclaimed author, she writes extensively about ancient disciplines connected with symbolism and teaches private workshops on dream interpretation and analysis from a Jungian perspective. She also writes under her nom de plume, Mason Clare. All her work draws upon her knowledge of ancient and modern philosophical teachings, fostering a merging of our physical, mental, and spiritual selves.

Synopsis Just How Married Do You Want to Be? by : Jim Sumner

Men Are from Strip Clubs. Women Are from Seminary. Jim and Sarah Sumner met at church. Jim, a new Christian and former male stripper, impressed Sarah with his desire to grow in his faith and to see people meet the God he had met. Sarah, a Ph.D. in theology and a division leader in evangelism, impressed Jim with her depth of knowledge and heart for discipleship. Their mutual admiration slowly turned to love, and the two were married. Just how married they're becoming is the story of this book. Sarah and Jim lay out a fresh approach to how husbands and wives relate biblically in marriage. In a culture where gender roles are often misunderstood, the Bible's teaching on the marital relationship is made more complex than it need be. What does it mean when we read that "the husband is the head of the wife"? How should the husband's headship play out when married couples deal with such issues as conflict and decision-making? Read this book and discover a fresh vision for how couples can become "one flesh" in a marriage that honors God.

Synopsis Just How Far from the Apple Tree? by : John S. Peale

For the only son of the famous preacher and author Norman Vincent Peale, life was not without its challenges. In this memoir, John S. Peale shares his story, one of love, tension, and resentment. Life in the shadow of a famous father became a long and heartfelt struggle to become his own man. Despite the difficulties he faced, he found a way to thrive and make his own way. After a long and distinguished career as a professor of philosophy, he became a scholar of religion in China. He was actively involved in church and community. His has been a successful road, but it wasnt always an easy one. Tensions between the famous father and his son created darkness and despair. While the two loved each other, their relationship was strained at best. Due to Johns strength of character and willful endurance, he was able to move beyond a sense of unworthiness to embrace that he is, indeed, a talented and giving man. Now in his seventies, John, with his warm and positive smile, emulates Confucius: At seventy, I could give my heart and mind free rein without overstepping the mark. Although the story of a famous parent causing resentment and isolation from a son or daughter is not unfamiliar, John seeks to inspire others in similar situations to have hope and faith in their own abilities and identity.

Synopsis The First 20 Hours by : Josh Kaufman

Forget the 10,000 hour rule— what if it’s possible to learn the basics of any new skill in 20 hours or less? Take a moment to consider how many things you want to learn to do. What’s on your list? What’s holding you back from getting started? Are you worried about the time and effort it takes to acquire new skills—time you don’t have and effort you can’t spare? Research suggests it takes 10,000 hours to develop a new skill. In this nonstop world when will you ever find that much time and energy? To make matters worse, the early hours of practicing something new are always the most frustrating. That’s why it’s difficult to learn how to speak a new language, play an instrument, hit a golf ball, or shoot great photos. It’s so much easier to watch TV or surf the web . . . In The First 20 Hours, Josh Kaufman offers a systematic approach to rapid skill acquisition— how to learn any new skill as quickly as possible. His method shows you how to deconstruct complex skills, maximize productive practice, and remove common learning barriers. By completing just 20 hours of focused, deliberate practice you’ll go from knowing absolutely nothing to performing noticeably well. Kaufman personally field-tested the methods in this book. You’ll have a front row seat as he develops a personal yoga practice, writes his own web-based computer programs, teaches himself to touch type on a nonstandard keyboard, explores the oldest and most complex board game in history, picks up the ukulele, and learns how to windsurf. Here are a few of the simple techniques he teaches: Define your target performance level: Figure out what your desired level of skill looks like, what you’re trying to achieve, and what you’ll be able to do when you’re done. The more specific, the better. Deconstruct the skill: Most of the things we think of as skills are actually bundles of smaller subskills. If you break down the subcomponents, it’s easier to figure out which ones are most important and practice those first. Eliminate barriers to practice: Removing common distractions and unnecessary effort makes it much easier to sit down and focus on deliberate practice. Create fast feedback loops: Getting accurate, real-time information about how well you’re performing during practice makes it much easier to improve. Whether you want to paint a portrait, launch a start-up, fly an airplane, or juggle flaming chainsaws, The First 20 Hours will help you pick up the basics of any skill in record time . . . and have more fun along the way.
