A man of radiant personality, all embracing sympathies and inexhaustible good humor, his personality won from his friends and associates an unwavering loyalty and devotion. He was always a dominant figure, over-topping even the great offices he filled. As one of the Directors of the American Social Sciences Association, he gave to the venerable body many years of brilliant service. Few men worked more intelligently and unselfishly than he when the Institute of Arts and Letters was being organized, or gave more disinterestedly and generously of his best, when the National Institute of Social Sciences was coming into existence. He was "blessed with the great natural gifts of rapid, clear thinking," as some one has said of him, "and a fluency of tongue and pen possessed by but few." Scholarly journals are the capillaries of the scientific world, ensuring the circulation of knowledge. Moreover, scholarly journals guide and indicate the scientific development in an academic field of study or in a country. Scholarly journals, which transfer and spread scientific information, are intended to properly fulfill their functions, preventing the transfer of imperfect or incorrect information to the science world. Significant issues are, therefore, inevitable in the characteristics of scientific studies in such disciplines and countries where the scholarly journals do not fulfill their functions properly. This study encompasses all scholarly journals published in Turkey in all fields of science and other disciplines. The reference questions in this study are grouped under three main categories: the contact and publication information, article evaluation, and publishing information. This study explores the flow of information within and among academic disciplines in the social sciences and humanities through analyses of the patterns of scholarly book reviewing. An elite sample of scholarly monographs published by university presses between 1971 and 1990 was used. Beginning with Derek de Solla Price, the measurement of communication within the disciplines of science has been ongoing. In the present book that field of inquiry is summarized and provides a basis for examining the flow of information in the social sciences and humanities.
