Synopsis The Poetical Books by : Big Dream Ministries

The Bible is simply a love letter compiled into sixty-six books and written over a period ofsixteen hundred years by more than forty authors living on three continents. Although theauthors came from different backgrounds, there is one message, one theme, one thread that runs throughout the entire Bible from the first book, Genesis, to the last book, Revelation. That message is God's redeeming love for mankind--a message that is as relevant for us today as it was two thousand years ago.The Poetical Books reveal the heart of the nation of Israel and are considered some ofthe finest literature ever written. It is as if the authors' very hearts have been openedup for all to see. Pain is not minimized, nor is man's struggle to understand God downplayed. Questions of suffering are boldly asked, worship is gloriously displayed, wisdom is held in highest esteem, married sexual love is unashamedly portrayed, and philosophy is openly debated.Hebrew poetry is not structured around the rhyme or meter we are used to reading andhearing. Instead, ideas are often stated in one line and then reinforced in the secondline, or a second line is composed to add to or complete the thoughts of the first. Inother forms, the second line of poetry contrasts the first.Job and Song of Solomon were written as dramatic poems that tell a story. Most ofthe psalms were written to be accompanied by an instrument and are thus examples oflyric poetry--rich in its language of worship and praise. Proverbs and Ecclesiastes areexamples of didactic poetry, giving instructions or lessons about life in short conciseverses.

Synopsis Wisdom Books by : William Angor Anderson

Unlike most Old Testament books, the Wisdom Books don't relate scenes from Israel's history. Instead, these sayings, songs, and poems show us how to understand and deal with everyday problems through the lens of faith. From the suffering of Job, to the pragmatic proverbs, to the vanity of all things and the intimate love of God, these books spiritually nourish and instruct God's people how to live well and in accord with one another and all creation. Guided by the Spirit, all can learn to know, love, and fear the Lord. Part of the Liguori Catholic Bible Study, a series of 21 books introducing each book of the Bible, providing insight into the sacred words of antiquity and inviting you to discover the living Word and its impact on our daily lives. The narrative, study questions, reflections, key notes, prayers, and an introduction to the spiritual practice of lectio divina will deepen your understanding of Scripture.

Synopsis My Psalm Has Turned into Weeping by : Will Kynes

Drawing inspiration from the widely recognized parody of Ps 8:5 in Job 7:17–18, this study inquires whether other allusions to the Psalms might likewise contribute to the dialogue between Job, his friends, and God. An intertextual method that incorporates both “diachronic” and “synchronic” concerns is applied to the sections of Job and the Psalms in which the intertextual connections are the most pronounced, the Job dialogue and six psalms that fall into three broad categories: praise (8, 107), supplication (39, 139), and instruction (1, 73). In each case, Job’s dependence on the Psalms is determined to be the more likely explanation of the parallel, and, in most, allusions to the same psalm appear in the speeches of both Job and the friends. The contrasting uses to which they put these psalms reflect conflicting interpretive approaches and uncover latent tensions within them by capitalizing on their ambiguities. They also provide historical insight into the Psalms’ authority and developing views of retribution. The dialogue created between Job and these psalms indicates the concern the book has with the proper response to suffering and the role the interpretation of authoritative texts may play in that reaction.
