This book presents a comprehensive history of the Royal Indian Navy (RIN). It traces the origins of the RIN to the East India Company, as early as 1612, and untangles the institution’s complex history. Capturing various transitional phases of the RIN, especially during the crucial period of 1920–1950, it concludes with the final transfer of the RIN from under the British Raj to independent India. Drawn from a host of primary sources—personal diaries and logs, official reports and documents—the author presents a previously unexplored history of colonial and imperial defence policy, and the contribution of the RIN during the World Wars. This book explores several aspects in RIN’s history such as its involvement in the First World War; its status in policies of the British Raj; the martial race theory in the RIN; and the development of the RIN from a non-combat force to a full-fledged combat defence force during the Second World War. It also studies the hitherto unexplored causes, nature and impact of the 1946 RIN Revolt on the eve of India’s independence from a fresh perspective. This book examines the emerging maritime security scene in Southeast Asia. It considers highly topical implications for the region of possible strategic competition between China and India - the rising naval powers of Asia - with a possible naval "arms race" emerging between these countries both with naval force development and operations. As part of its "Look East" policy, India has deployed naval units to the Pacific Ocean for port visits and exercises both with East Asian navies and the US Navy, but India is also concerned about the possibility of the Chinese Navy operating in the Indian Ocean. Even as the US-India defence relationship continues to deepen, the US and China are struggling to build a closer links. China’s and India’s strategic interests overlap in this region both in maritime strategic competition or conflict – which might be played out in the Bay of Bengal, the Malacca and Singapore Straits and the South China Sea. The sea lines of communication (SLOCs) through Southeast Asian waters constitute vital "choke points" between the Indian and Pacific Oceans carrying essential energy supplies for China and other Northeast Asian countries. Any strategic competition between China and India has implications for other major maritime players in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, especially Australia, the Republic of Korea and Japan, as well as the US. This volume of the navy's history covers the period from 1976 to 1990. It examines the navy's success in keeping abreast of advances in technology in step with progressive self-reliance. In a decade and a half of innovation, the navy equipped its indigenously built frigates, corvettes, and other vessels with combinations of the latest available weapons and equipment from the Soviet Union, from Europe, and from indigenous sources. A tiny "ship design cell," which in 1965 was designing yard craft, was by 1990 designing an aircraft carrier, submarines, and missile destroyers. The new acquisitions from the Soviet Union ranged from missile destroyers, conventional submarines, and long-range reconnaissance aircraft, to minesweepers. All these high-tech inductions needed to be operated and manned by better-educated and better-trained personnel. New maintenance, repair, and refit facilities had to be created. The increase in the volume of spares and the diversity of sources compelled modernization of the logistics system. This volume analyzes how these problems were tackled.
