Known today as a leading center of technological innovation, Mountain View's modern Silicon Valley landscape hides a rich history stretching back to the 1850s.

The little town in upstate South Carolina, embraced by nearby Paris Mountain and the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, is intriguing by its name alone, "Travelers Rest." It sits at the foot of the Appalachian Mountains, yet it is only a half-day's journey from the Atlantic Ocean. This village has always been a place where travelers stopped. Situated on a crossroad of Cherokee trade trails, it became a rest stop for drovers moving their livestock over the mountains. Inns and rest camps developed, and the town of Travelers Rest grew around them. Scots-Irish settled the former Cherokee lands, and patriots were ceded land for Revolutionary War service. In 1887, the new railroad afforded access to factories and markets and improved transportation for tourists. Travelers Rest is proud of its history and eagerly looks forward to a thriving future built on a solid foundation of education, commerce, and community activities.

This collection presents a postcard tour of Durango and its environs and provides keen insight into the history and colorful character of this area, which has been a vibrant center of Southwestern Colorado for more than a century. A brief history of postcards as a convenient medium for sharing messages--and as a revolutionary departure from Victorian-era long letters--is included here as well. The Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College is pleased to present these evocative images gathered by the indefatigable Nina Heald Webber.

Paterson has been a place of comings and goings for generations. Images of America: Paterson explores the city's past with vintage photographs and interesting history and folklore. Some notables associated with the Silk City include Larry Doby, who broke the color barrier in the American League; shuttle astronaut Kathryn Sullivan; and actress Sue Ann Langdon. An industrial giant envisioned by Alexander Hamilton, Paterson gave birth to the famed Colt revolver, the modern-day submarine, the locomotives that linked America's coasts, and the engine that powered Charles Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis. Also included are historic buildings such as the Fabian, the theater that Lou Costello frequented for premieres, and Paterson's Danforth Library, designed by architect Henry Bacon, creator of the Lincoln Memorial.

'Sconset, the popularized version of its official name Siasconset, prides itself on preserving the charm and rich, historical character of the quaint, little village in the southeastern corner of Nantucket Island. Acclaimed as one of America's first summer vacation retreats, 'Sconset is cherished for its rose-covered cottages, lush hydrangeas, quiet paths and lanes, three miles of soft-sand beach, its iconic Sankaty Head Lighthouse, and a host of seasonal amenities. Siasconset is a Wampanoag Algonquian word meaning "place of great bones." Seven miles from bustling Nantucket town, 'Sconset was a remote fishing station of the Wampanoag when they first met with Europeans in 1659. Today, 'Sconseters embrace a strong sense of community with more than 2,000 summer residents but only about 200 hardy souls living there year-round.

It was a hot afternoon in August 1856 when people in southern Iredell County, North Carolina, gathered for a special event. The train was on its way, bringing officials, a brass band, and the economic future. John Franklin Moore viewed the railroad tracks as an opportunity to fulfill his dream of starting a community and building a town. He knew that trains would bring customers and new citizens and carry freight to and from markets. Moore took a bold step by providing land for a depot and siding and offering land for homes and businesses. Moores Siding prospered and grew, and in 1873, the village was incorporated and named Mooresville to honor the founder. Generations of Mooresville citizens have taken daring steps into the future, building a community that is more than just a placeits a home. This is a story of Mooresville, the Queen of Iredell.

Much more than the typical vacation destination, Key West combines a free-spirited ambiance with magnificent coral reefs, a unique historic legacy with an enduring artistic sensibility. For centuries, explorers and adventurers, immigrants and entrepreneurs, artists and wanderers have come to the island oasis, and today Key West, a city like no other, is home to them all. Through hurricanes, fires, labor strikes, and the tourism boom, the community of Key West has sustained a unique way of life and attracted a wide variety of people to its shores, including such famous figures as writers Ernest Hemingway and Tennessee Williams, President Harry Truman, and musician Jimmy Buffett. Whether strolling through the downtown historic district, searching eclectic shops for one-of-a-kind treasures, enjoying a piece of key lime pie, or participating in the look-alike contest during Hemingway Days, Key West offers endless opportunities for pleasure. Situated along the eastern border of Los Angeles County and at the foot of the majestic San Gabriel Mountains is the community of Claremont. The city, founded in 1887 and incorporated in 1907, quickly became one of Southern California's most unique communities. Known as the "City of Trees and PhDs," Claremont has become famous for its lush oak-and-sycamore-lined boulevards, beautifully crafted architecture, and as the home of the highly praised liberal arts schools of the Claremont Colleges. First settled by the Serrano peoples on Indian Hill Mesa and once part of the vast Rancho San Jose, Claremont has gone through several important periods, including expanding from a frontier town to a Congregationalist hub and transitioning from a citrus powerhouse to an artist colony. Equal parts suburban community and college town, Claremont has attracted many for its picturesque setting and charming small-town feel.

From its origins as a Native American trail to its iconic status in global culture today, Broadway tells the story of New York as it grew from a Dutch colony into a world-class city. Broadway has been the site of many firsts and many superlatives: the first subway line in the city, the tallest buildings, and one of the longest streets in the world. Beginning along the winding streets of the original settlements amid the skyscrapers of the Financial District, Broadway heads north through the neighborhoods of SoHo and Greenwich Village. It then traverses some of the city's most famous plazas, including Flatiron, Herald Square, Times Square, and Columbus Circle, before entering Upper Manhattan and passing institutions like Lincoln Center, Columbia University, and City College. Today, Broadway continues to be at the forefront of New York City's urban developments.

Founded in 1853, Fort Riley was established to protect merchants and settlers on the Santa Fe and Oregon-California Trails. Fort Riley kept the peace during the Civil War and in 1893, a cavalry school began operation there. Fort Riley continued to train mounted troops during the Golden Age of Cavalry after World War I, but also served as a training site for more than 150,000 troops during the first and second World Wars. This collection of vintage images commemorating the sesquicentennial of Fort Riley is a colorful, patriotic reminder of the military post that has served the nation continuously since its founding 150 years ago.
