Synopsis A Concise Introduction to Linear Algebra by : Géza Schay
Building on the author's previous edition on the subject (Introduction to Linear Algebra, Jones & Bartlett, 1996), this book offers a refreshingly concise text suitable for a standard course in linear algebra, presenting a carefully selected array of essential topics that can be thoroughly covered in a single semester. Although the exposition generally falls in line with the material recommended by the Linear Algebra Curriculum Study Group, it notably deviates in providing an early emphasis on the geometric foundations of linear algebra. This gives students a more intuitive understanding of the subject and enables an easier grasp of more abstract concepts covered later in the course. The focus throughout is rooted in the mathematical fundamentals, but the text also investigates a number of interesting applications, including a section on computer graphics, a chapter on numerical methods, and many exercises and examples using MATLAB. Meanwhile, many visuals and problems (a complete solutions manual is available to instructors) are included to enhance and reinforce understanding throughout the book. Brief yet precise and rigorous, this work is an ideal choice for a one-semester course in linear algebra targeted primarily at math or physics majors. It is a valuable tool for any professor who teaches the subject.

Synopsis System Modeling and Optimization XX by : E.W. Sachs
System Modeling and Optimization XX deals with new developments in the areas of optimization, optimal control and system modeling. The themes range across various areas of optimization: continuous and discrete, numerical and analytical, finite and infinite dimensional, deterministic and stochastic, static and dynamic, theory and applications, foundations and case studies. Besides some classical topics, modern areas are also presented in the contributions, including robust optimization, filter methods, optimization of power networks, data mining and risk control. This volume contains invited and selected papers from presentations at the 20th IFIP TC7 Conference on System Modeling and Optimization, which took place at the University of Trier, Germany from July 23 to 27, 2001, and which was sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP).

Synopsis Technological Innovation for Cloud-Based Engineering Systems by : Luis M. Camarinha-Matos
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 6th IFIP WG 5.5/SOCOLNET Doctoral Conference on Computing, Electrical and Industrial Systems, DoCEIS 2015, held in Costa de Caparica, Portugal, in April 2015. The 54 revised full papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 119 submissions. The papers present selected results produced in engineering doctoral programs and focus on development and application of cloud-based engineering systems. Research results and ongoing work are presented, illustrated and discussed in the following areas: collaborative networks; cloud-based manufacturing; reconfigurable manufacturing; distributed computing and embedded systems; perception and signal processing; healthcare; smart monitoring systems; and renewable energy and energy-related management, decision support, simulation and power conversion.

Synopsis An Introduction to Medical Physics by : Muhammad Maqbool
This book begins with the basic terms and definitions and takes a student, step by step, through all areas of medical physics. The book covers radiation therapy, diagnostic radiology, dosimetry, radiation shielding, and nuclear medicine, all at a level suitable for undergraduates. This title not only describes the basics concepts of the field, but also emphasizes numerical and mathematical problems and examples. Students will find An Introduction to Medical Physics to be an indispensible resource in preparations for further graduate studies in the field.

Synopsis Software Architecture: System Design, Development and Maintenance by : Jan Bosch
For more and more systems, software has moved from a peripheral to a central role, replacing mechanical parts and hardware and giving the product a competitive edge. Consequences of this trend are an increase in: the size of software systems, the variability in software artifacts, and the importance of software in achieving the system-level properties. Software architecture provides the necessary abstractions for managing the resulting complexity. We here introduce the Third Working IEEFlIFIP Conference on Software Architecture, WICSA3. That it is already the third such conference is in itself a clear indication that software architecture continues to be an important topic in industrial software development and in software engineering research. However, becoming an established field does not mean that software architecture provides less opportunity for innovation and new directions. On the contrary, one can identify a number of interesting trends within software architecture research. The first trend is that the role of the software architecture in all phases of software development is more explicitly recognized. Whereas initially software architecture was primarily associated with the architecture design phase, we now see that the software architecture is treated explicitly during development, product derivation in software product lines, at run-time, and during system evolution. Software architecture as an artifact has been decoupled from a particular lifecycle phase.

Synopsis White-Collar Crime in the Shadow Economy by : Petter Gottschalk
This open access book examines the magnitude, causes of, and reactions to white-collar crime, based on the theories and research of those who have uncovered various forms of white-collar crime. It argues that the offenders who are convicted represent only ‘the tip of the iceberg’ of a much greater problem: because white-collar crime is forced to compete with other kinds of financial crime like social security fraud for police resources and so receives less attention and fewer investigations. Gottschalk and Gunnesdal also offer insights into estimation techniques for the shadow economy, in an attempt to comprehend the size of the problem. Holding broad appeal for academics, practitioners in public administration, and government agencies, this innovative study serves as a timely starting point for examining the lack of investigation, detection, and conviction of powerful white-collar criminals.
