Synopsis Passages from the Diary of General Patrick Gordon of Auchleuchries by : Patrick Gordon
First published in 1968. This is a volume of selected passages from the extensive diary of General Gordon: the soldier of fortune, whose memoirs are now introduced to the Spadling Club, who had been but a short while dead when public attention was turned to the eight or ten thick quartos, in which, for forty years, he had recorded, day by day, the incidents of his eventful life. So early as 1724, a translation of the Journal from its original English into Russian. In printing these selections, an attempt has been made so far to connect them together, by an outline of Gordon's life in the interval, with occasional quotations from some of the more memorable pages of his Journal, such as those in which he notes the beginnings of his intimacy with Peter the Great or chronicles the prompt and vigorous acts by which he quelled the revolt of the Strelitzes.

Synopsis The Great Immigration by : Waldemar Kowalski
In the second half of the sixteenth century, Scottish immigrants to Little Poland became a visible ethnic minority in numerous towns of that province and particularly in its capital, Cracow. This is the first study to examine this urbanized immigration in the period until the 1660s, when Poland–Lithuania, devastated by the mid-century Swedish invasion, was no longer an attractive migrant destination. From around the 1570s, affluent Scottish merchants developed intense commercial relations in central Europe, while peddlers of that nationality distributed so-called ‘Scotch goods’ at local markets. The majority of Scots participated in the life of local Evangelical congregations and suffered religious persecutions together with their co-religionists. This prompted their collaboration with the Swedish occupants against their Catholic neighbors.

Synopsis Succession to the Throne in Early Modern Russia by : Paul Bushkovitch
This revisionist history of the transfer of the tsar's power in early modern Russia, from the Moscow princes of the fifteenth century to Peter the Great, overturns generations of scholarship to argue that legal primogeniture never existed: the monarch designated an heir that was usually the eldest son only by custom, not by law.
