Synopsis Motivation, Volition, and Engagement in Online Distance Learning by : Ucar, Hasan
Motivation is an important factor in and for all education levels. However, as learners in online distance education milieus are away from both teachers, other learners, and the learning environments physically, this concept becomes more important for online education. Motivating learners in distance education and keeping their motivation alive throughout the learning process is an issue that should be emphasized and taken care of for teachers and instructional designers. At this point, although there are many approaches, models, and theories regarding enhancing and sustaining motivation and engagement in the education processes, it is seen that there is not enough work and/or effective and efficient strategies that can be applied in online distance learning environments. Motivation, Volition, and Engagement in Online Distance Learning evaluates motivational obstacles in online distance education both theoretically and practically, identifies the strengths and weaknesses of the online education environments regarding motivation, and provides actionable motivational and volitional strategies for online educators. This book offers coverage of topics such as learning theories, motivation research, and synchronous online learning environments, making it a valuable resource for researchers, professionals, decision makers, institutions in all education levels, academicians, pre-service teachers, and most importantly, online educators from various disciplines and learners from all educational landscapes.

Synopsis How to Make Virtual Engagement Easy by : Chad Littlefield
Please don't read this book in order. We created this compilation to serve as a just-in-time reference guide that you could turn to when you needed to increase engagement. Each chapter stands on its own, and you have the freedom to jump around. In fact, you'll get the most out of this book if you:1) Start at the table of contents.2) Find a topic you are most curious about.3) Read only that chapter. 4) Put the book down and experiment with what you've learned. After adapting to a remote work environment, online teaching, virtual training and distance learning during the pandemic, we all discovered some things we loved and some things we loathed. Being able to switch back and forth from virtual to in-person environments can give us all more flexibility. When done well, it can be more inclusive. Moving forward, organizations that are great at both will rise to the top. Will and I firmly believe that genuine connections, high engagement and fantastic collaboration are all still perfectly possible when remote. Each chapter of the book is based on a video from our YouTube channel dedicated to helping leaders and educators make connection easy. If you don't feel like reading, take out your phone and scan the QR code to make the chapter come to life! You'll find the main channel page, where videos are neatly sorted by topic: You may also notice that almost every chapter and video title is a question. That's because each one of the 200+ videos on our channel is a response to a question that a leader or educator has asked. For example, a participant once stuck around on Zoom after I finished leading a workshop on the "5 Ingredients for Virtual Engagement." After everybody else clicked "leave meeting," they whispered, "OK, so this is amazing, but how do you engage somebody when attendance is mandatory?" Two weeks later, we released a video tutorial answering that very question.

Synopsis Engagement Design by : Nelson Zagalo
Interactive media designers have been discussing modes to optimize interaction design beyond mere usability. With the arrival of Emotional Design followed by the success of the User Experience (UX) approaches, the discussion continued and augmented. Experience has become a complex buzzword, which is more about the subject’s experience than the product, and this is why it's difficult, or even impossible, to define it in a concise manner. We propose to move the discussion from Experience towards Engagement, to emphasize the design of the relationship between artefacts, contexts and users. Engagement asks for a more concrete type of experience, with specific needs, motives, skills and competences, which can be more clearly worked into the design of artefacts. Engagement also differs from other concepts e.g. fun, enjoyment, happiness or well-being and is open enough to grant freedom to designers in creating their personal world views. To push this new approach, we offer in this book a full model for the design of engagement in interactive media, still believing it can be applied beyond that. The model is arranged around what we call the three engagement streams: Progression, Expression and Relation.
