Beginner's Danish offers basic language instruction in the national language of Denmark, presenting grammar, vocabulary, and common phrases in clear, concise lessons. Perfect for both classroom and independent students, each of the 13 lessons opens with dialogues on topics such as greetings, family, athletics, dining, illness, holidays and celebrations. Following the dialogues are vocabulary lists, explanations of grammar, and exercises. Two audio CDs accompany the lessons, providing correct pronunciation of all the vocabulary and a selection of the dialogues, with pauses for repetition by the student. Also included are an exercise key, Danish-English and English-Danish glossaries, as well as an introduction to Danish history and culture.

This course has six parts: 1. A general introduction to written and spoken Danish. 2. A chapter on Danish phonetics. 3. A grammar, arranged by sections under nouns, adjectives, adverbs, etc., with chapters on word-order and word-formation, and including exercises. 4. A section of general information - about money, weights and measures, meals, etc. 5. Twenty-five Danish texts (twenty prose, five poetry) from standard authors for translation into English. 6. Twenty English texts, graded in difficulty, for translation into Danish. No other Danish grammer and reader with this scope and degree of scholarship exists. Mr Bredsdorff has taught in England for a number of years, and most of his pupils have started with no knowledge of Danish. His course has been tried out and proved successful.

This book is about dictionaries and dictionary making. In six thematic sections it presents nineteen contributions covering a wide field within lexicography: Online Lexicography, Dictionary Structure, Phraseology in Dictionaries, LSP Lexicography, Dictionaries and the User, plus Etymology, History and Culture in Lexicography. Some chapters focus on theoretical aspects, others report on dictionary work in the making, and still others compare and analyze existing dictionaries. Common to all authors, however, is the concern for the dictionary user. Trivial as it may seem, the fact that dictionaries are meant to fulfill the needs of specific user groups has only recently achieved widespread recognition in the lexicographical literature.
