Synopsis The Adventurers by : Jimmy D. McCombs

What happens when six naïve, immature, unprepared college students go to a costume photo shop at different times to have their picture taken? They get transported to an alternate world where they then realize they should have listened much closer to the couple taking their pictures. They find themselves thrown together in life-or-death situations where they either pull together or perish. It takes days before they finally figure out that what they had chosen to wear is what they would have to survive on their trip through the magical Kingdom of Felgar. There are kings and queens of several kingdoms within this world of islands. Along the way, they will meet ladies and bandits, dragons and fairies, wizards, evil sorcerers, pirates, and creatures never seen before. Trees and plants that are alive and beings so horrible that they can frighten your soul from within you! This place is a real hell on earth, and they had to be prepared to deal with all the situations that came about. What they put on, held on to, and carried was all they had to survive in this strange and very deadly, beautiful, mysterious medieval world. What they didn’t have or needed they could buy, trade, or even kill for. The group finally reaches a point they understand they must complete the mission given to them to topple the Dark Lizard Priest and free the Kingdom of Felgar from his grasp before they are able to return home to their own world.

Synopsis Catching Shrimp with Bare Hands by : Michelle Robin La

Catching Shrimp with Bare Hands is the true story of Luong La, a boy growing up in the Mekong Delta in the midst of the Vietnam War. When the 1968 Tet Offensive forces Luong's family to flee the countryside, his mother continues to travel back and forth to their island farm despite threats from the Viet Cong and nearby firefights. Out on their farm in the middle of the Mekong River, Luong wants to catch fish and slingshot birds, but Viet Cong, called mysterious misters by the villagers, stop by his family's hut and stay. "The frog dies because of its big mouth," his mother warns. The mysterious misters behead a neighbor, and Luong's aunt goes missing. Luong plans to join the Army as soon as he's old enough to fight, but the war ends before he has a chance. Communism descends, pulling him back in time to a land without electricity or fuel where his family has to hide the books that haven't already been burned. Propaganda that "kneads their skulls," neighbors spying on each other, and the threat of starvation drive Luong to escalating acts of defiance. About to get caught by the authorities, he drops out of school to help his family build a boat to escape.

Synopsis Yoga for People Who Can't Be Bothered to Do It by : Geoff Dyer

Mordantly funny, thought-provoking travel essays, from the acclaimed author of Out of Sheer Rage and “one of our most original writers” (New York Magazine). This isn’t a self-help book; it’s a book about how Geoff Dyer could do with a little help. In these genre-defying tales, he travels from Amsterdam to Cambodia, Rome to Indonesia, Libya to Burning Man in the Black Rock Desert, floundering in a sea of grievances, with fleeting moments of transcendental calm his only reward for living in a perpetual state of motion. But even as he recounts his side-splitting misadventures in each of these locales, Dyer is always able to sneak up and surprise you with insight into much more serious matters. Brilliantly riffing off our expectations of external and internal journeys, Dyer welcomes the reader as a companion, a fellow perambulator in search of something and nothing at the same time.
