Synopsis Boron Carbide by : Kolan Madhav Reddy
Boron carbide is a superhard and lightweight ceramic material. As a result of these characteristics, it used as a protective component in bulletproof vests, tank armour and also has many other industrial applications (eg: tooling, abrasives). Research on boron carbide remains active given a long-standing challenge to understand its complex failure behavior in extreme environments owing to its unique microstructure and mechanical properties, where many current efforts are underway to improve its behavior through microstructure alteration via additives that form secondary phases, chemical doping, and altering the chemical composition of the boron-to-carbon ratio in the crystal structure. This book covers some of the key challenges involving boron carbide that are currently being studied by many materials scientists and ceramists. The authors who are active in this research field have prepared the chapters for this book and specific topics covered highlight the state-of-the art research in structure, processing, properties and applications. The organization of the book is designed to provide an easy understanding for students and professionals interested in advanced material for novel applications.

Synopsis Boron Nitride Nanotubes in Nanomedicine by : Gianni Ciofani
Boron Nitride Nanotubes in Nanomedicine compiles, for the first time in a single volume, all the information needed by researchers interested in this promising type of smart nanoparticles and their applications in biomedicine. Boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) represent an innovative and extremely intriguing class of nanomaterials. After introducing BNNTs and explaining their preparation and evaluation, the book shows how the physical, chemical, piezoelectric and biocompatibility properties of these nanotubes give rise to their potential uses in biomedicine. Evidence is offered (from both in vitro and in vivo investigations) for how BNNTs can be useful in biomedical and nanomedicine applications such as therapeutic applications, tissue regeneration, nanovectors for drug delivery, and intracellular nanotransducers. - Covers a range of promising biomedical BNNT applications - Provides great value not just to academics but also industry researchers in fields such as materials science, molecular biology, pharmacology, biomedical engineering, and biophysical sciences - Offers evidence for how BNNTs can be useful in biomedical and nanomedicine applications such as therapy, tissue regeneration, nanovectors for drug delivery, and intracellular nanotransducers - Incorporates, for the first time in a single volume, all the information needed by researchers interested in this promising type of smart nanoparticles and their applications in biomedicine

Synopsis Nature's Building Blocks by : John Emsley
A readable, informative, fascinating entry on each one of the 100-odd chemical elements, arranged alphabetically from actinium to zirconium. Each entry comprises an explanation of where the element's name comes from, followed by Body element (the role it plays in living things), Element ofhistory (how and when it was discovered), Economic element (what it is used for), Environmental element (where it occurs, how much), Chemical element (facts, figures and narrative), and Element of surprise (an amazing, little-known fact about it). A wonderful 'dipping into' source for the familyreference shelf and for students.

Synopsis Electrical and Electronic Properties of Materials by : Md. Kawsar Alam
Materials properties, whether microscopic or macroscopic, are of immense interest to the materials scientists, physicists, chemists as well as to engineers. Investigation of such properties, theoretically and experimentally, has been one of the fundamental research directions for many years that has also resulted in the discovery of many novel materials. It is also equally important to correctly model and measure these materials properties. Keeping such interests of research communities in mind, this book has been written on the properties of polyesters, varistor ceramics, and powdered porous compacts and also covers some measurement and parameter extraction methods for dielectric materials. Four contributed chapters and an introductory chapter from the editor explain each class of materials with practical examples.

Synopsis Boronic Acids by : Dennis G. Hall
For the first time, the whole field of organoboronic acids is presented in one comprehensive handbook. Professor Dennis Hall, a rising star within the community, covers all aspects of this important substance class, including applications in chemistry, biology and medicine. Starting with an introduction to the structure, properties, and preparation of boronic acid derivatives, together with an overview of their reactions and applications, the book goes on to look at metal-catalyzed borylation of alkanes and arenas, coupling reactions and rhodium-catalyzed additions of boronic acids to alkenes and carbonyl compounds. There follows chapters on copper-promoted C-O and C-N cross-coupling of boronic acids, recent applications in organic synthesis, as well as alpha-haloalkylboronic esters in asymmetric synthesis. Later sections deal with cycloadditions, organoboronic acids, oxazaborolidines as asymmetric inducers, and boronic acid based receptors and sensors. The whole is rounded off with experimental procedures, making this invaluable reading for organic, catalytic and medicinal chemists, as well as those working in organometallics.

Synopsis Boron Reagents in Synthesis by : Adiel Coca
Boron compounds have been used extensively in organic synthesis for more than sixty years. Some of the best known reactions in synthesis, such as the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling and the hydroboration reaction, involve boron compounds. Several natural products containing boron have been isolated in the last fifty years, including ionophoric macrodiolide antibiotics boromycin, borophycin, aplasmomycins A, B, and C, and tartrolons B, C, and E, as well as autoinducer-2. The study of compounds containing boronic acids for application in pharmaceuticals and materials science has grown tremendously over the last few decades. These include bortezomib, ixazomib, and tavaborole. Several more boron-based drugs are currently in clinical trials. Boron neutron capture therapy has the potential to provide a treatment for various cancers. In addition, materials bearing boronic acids are been studied as potential sensors for biological molecules, such as saccharides and glycoproteins that possess cis-1,2- or cis-1,3-diols.
