Synopsis A Complete Guide to Heraldry - Illustrated by Nine Plates and Nearly 800 other Designs by : Arthur Charles Fox-Davies
This antiquarian book contains a detailed treatise on English heraldry, with information on its history, development, and popularity. Heraldry is the profession, study, or art of creating, granting, and blazoning arms and ruling on questions of rank or protocol, as exercised by an officer of the army; and also comprises the practice of designing, displaying, describing, and recording coats of arms and heraldic badges. Illustrated by nine plates and nearly three hundred designs, this volume is a comprehensive treatment of the subject that will greatly appeal to those with an interest in heraldry. The chapters of this volume include: 'The Origin of Armory', 'The Status and the Meaning of a Coat of Arms in Great Britain', 'The Heralds and Officers of Arms', 'Heraldic Brasses', 'The Component Parts of an Achievement', 'The Shield', 'The Field of a Shield and the Heraldic Tinctures', 'The Rules of Blazon', et cetera. We are republishing this vintage text now complete with a new prefatory biography of the author.

Synopsis British Expeditionary Force by : Andrew Rawson
The book concentrates on the British Expeditionary Force's defensive actions during the retreat from Mons through to the advance to the River Aisne and the first days of trench warfare. Then moved north to Ypres, where it endured three long weeks of German attacks. By compiling information from the Official History and the printed histories we get an in-depth British account of each large battle and minor action.?Together the narrative and over 60 maps provide an insight into the British Army's experience during those early days of the First World War. This is about the men who made a difference, the men who fought off many times their number, those who led the counterattacks and those who were awarded the Victoria Cross. Discover the real 1914 campaign fought by the British Army and learn how the brave soldiers of the BEF fought hard to achieve their objectives.

Synopsis The Music of Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) by : Carl B. Schmidt
The name of Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) was first brought to prominence in the 1920s as a member of Les Six, a group of young French composers encouraged by Satie and Cocteau. His subsequent fame spread well beyond France, and he is coming to be regarded as one of this century's most significant composers. His compositions are heard constantly in concert halls the world over, and numerous recordings, including complete sets of songs and piano music, have been released. Books, articles and more than a dozen doctoral dissertations have discussed his music. Carl Schmidt's catalogue of Poulenc's works represents the first comprehensive attempt to list an oeuvre which numbers approximately 185 compositions written from his teenage years until his death at the age of 63. The Catalogue indentifies a number of unpublished works, and adds a small group of compositions to his musical canon for the first time. Each work, whether complete or unfinished, published or unpublished, is described fully. Catalogue entries list and describe all known printed editions (including reprints) and manuscript copies of each work. In addition, they provide detailed compositional histories based on numerous letters, documents, and press accounts, many of which have not been published previously. Russian interest in Poulenc's music, manifested in press runs exceeding one million copies, is also revealed for the first time.
