Synopsis Bridget Riley by :
In this compact survey of Bridget Rileys career, the dialogue between monochrome and color in the British artists work is explored over a span of 50 years through 2015 in essay and image. Accompanying the 201617 show at the Scottish National Gallery, the hardcover publication sports an Op Art cover and includes 30 illustrations of the artists work and essays by art historians .ric de Chassey and Frances Spalding, as well as a historic interview by art critic Robert Kudielka. Together they contextualize Rileys early developments and demonstrate how her latest paintings progress directly out of a rigorous engagement with color. Riley gained critical attention internationally for her black-and-white paintings during the mid-1960s, using elementary shapes to engage the eye by creating flux and rhythm within the pictorial field. Throughout the succeeding decades, Riley has continued her investigation into perception be it through rich colors or simple black and white.

Synopsis Communicating Vessels by : Andrä Breton
What Freud did for dreams, André Breton (1896–1966) does for despair: in its distortions he finds the marvelous, and through the marvelous the redemptive force of imagination. Originally published in 1932 in France, Les Vases communicants is an effort to show how the discoveries and techniques of surrealism could lead to recovery from despondency. This English translation makes available "the theories upon which the whole edifice of surrealism, as Breton conceived it, is based." In Communicating Vessels Breton lays out the problems of everyday experience and of intellect. His involvement with political thought and action led him to write about the relations between nations and individuals in a mode that moves from the quotidian to the lyrical. His dreams triggered a curious correspondence with Freud, available only in this book. As Caws writes, "The whole history of surrealism is here, in these pages."

Synopsis A New Era by : Alice Strang
- This book accompanies an exhibition to be held at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh from 2 December 2017 to 10 June 2018Revealing an alternative story of modern Scottish art, A New Era examines the most experimental work of Scottish artists during the first half of the 20th century. It challenges the accepted view of the dominance of the Scottish Colorists and uncovers the hitherto little-known progressive Scottish art world. Through these works, we can see the commitment of Scottish artists to the progress of art through their engagement and interpretation of the great movements of European modern art, from Fauvism and Expressionism, to Cubism, Art Deco, abstraction and Surrealism, among others. Looking at the most advanced work of high-profile artists such as William Gillies and Stanley Cursiter, and lesser-known talents, like Tom Pow and Edwin G. Lucas, A New Era takes its name from the group established in Edinburgh in 1939 to show surreal and abstract work by its members. An exhibition is to be held at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh from 2 December 2017 to 10 June 2018.

Synopsis The Story of Scottish Art by : Lachlan Goudie
The compelling story of over 5,000 years of Scottish art, told by Lachlan Goudie, renowned contemporary Scottish artist, broadcaster and presenter of BBC Four's 'The Story of Scottish Art'. This is the story of how Scotland has defined itself through its art over the past 5000 years, from the earliest enigmatic Neolithic symbols etched onto the landscape of Kilmartin Glen to Glasgow's fame as a centre of artistic innovation today. Lachlan Goudie brings his perspective and passion as a practising artist and broadcaster to narrate the joys and struggles of artists across the millennia striving to fulfil their vision and the dramatic transformations of Scottish society reflected in their art. The Story of Scottish Art is beautifully illustrated with the diverse artworks that form Scotland's long tradition of bold creativity: Pictish carved stones and Celtic metalwork; Renaissance palaces and chapels; paintings of Scottish life and landscapes by Horatio McCulloch, David Wilkie and Joan Eardley; designs by master architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh; and collage and sculpture by Pop Art pioneer Eduardo Paolozzi. Lachlan tells the compelling story of how and why these and many other Scottish masterpieces were created, and the impact they have had on the world.

The new works are particularly inspired by Ramsay's wonderful and much-loved painting of his wife, but also consider some seldom seen drawings from Ramsay's 1755-57 sketchbook. Watt's response is made through a series of interpretations in her own style, while developing a great appreciation of the remarkable delicacy in Ramsay's work. The new paintings and historical portraits and drawings are accompanied by a statement from the artist and commentaries on the works featured in the book. While offering a fresh and modern perspective on the historical works of one of Scotland's outstanding portraitists, this book also reveals insight into how one of today's leading artists looks at and is inspired by the art of the past.

Synopsis Joan Eardley by : ELLIOTT
* Focuses on a much-loved artist* The first book to focus specifically on Eardley's time in Catterline* Brings to light significant new research* Published in 2021 to coincide with the 100th anniversary of Joan Eardley's birth* From the same author as the highly successful Joan Eardley: A Sense of Place, ISBN 9781911054023In 1951, Joan Eardley visited the coastal fishing village of Catterline in north-east Scotland for the first time. Her visit sparked a fascination that would last the rest of her life. She made the village her home and found inspiration in the dramatic light and rapidly changing weather. The gentle landscapes and wild rolling seascapes she painted of Catterline in wind, snow, rain and sun are among her best-loved works. Unpublished archival material and interviews with many of those who knew her shed new light on Eardley's life in Catterline. A vivid portrait is painted both of Eardley and of the village, showing the vital part Catterline played in her development as an artist. The story of her experiences on the wild Scottish coast is evocatively told and beautifully illustrated with some of her most remarkable drawings and paintings.
