Synopsis Business Logistics by : P. van Buijtenen

Business logistics has recently been defined as 'the process of managing all activities required to strategically move raw ma terials, parts, and finished inventory from vendors, between enterprise facilities, and to customers' . Many other definitions are available but this definition (1) stresses the fact that logistics concerns the strategical management level in the first place because of the over-all character of logistics and its long-term aspects; too long, emphasis has been laid on the operational aspects of logistics. The heart of the logistics concept is an integrated approach where cost savings are identified by considering the total costs of the system. This approach already implies the need for over-all management since the decisions about the different elements of the logistics system (transportation, inventories, facilities, unitization, communications) are traditionally made within different functions or departments. However, the need for over-all management becomes more stringent where the effectiveness of the company as a whole is considered i. e. where the logistics system has to be brought into balance with the production system and the marketing system (e. g. inventory levels vs. production-run lengths and customer service levels) . All elements of the logistiCS system have long-term aspects which have to be put into a planning system, c.q. the planning of a new transportation method, the planning of a new distribution centre.

Synopsis The Innovative Company by : Danièle Chauvel

The concept of innovation is the result of human activities carried out to produce a new product, service or something new that creates value. More recently, the idea of an innovative enterprise, organization or company has emerged, thanks to an increasing interest in innovation as an essential process in a variety of economic, technological and sociological contexts. This book is part of a set on Innovation between Risk and Reward and focuses on the close relationship between innovation and knowledge. It provides the reader with the outline of an innovative company, focusing on the organizational aspects that contribute to defining it and sketching out the profile of what an innovative company is or should be in the age of knowledge. The authors explore the literary corpus in order to outline the state of the art but also the reality of innovative enterprise in the form of meetings and interviews with both large and small companies.

Synopsis Professionals ́ Perspectives of Corporate Social Responsibility by : Samuel O Idowu

Since the general acceptance of the field of corporate social responsibility worldwide, corporate entities and those who act for them either as executives or "ordinary" employees are expected to be socially responsible. Being socially responsible has a number of quantifiable and unquantifiable benefits for the entity and its stakeholders. It improves the entity’s bottom line results, protects jobs, and is also better for the environment. As such, it makes good sense for professionals and those that they interact with as colleagues, suppliers of goods and services, lenders etc to want to take the issue of CSR seriously. This perhaps explains why this book has chosen to explore how 19 professions across the world have integrated and continue to impress upon their staff the importance of CSR in their operational activities. We are constantly reminded that our world’s natural resources are exhaustible; we can therefore no longer live for today alone if we do not want to cause substantial problems for future generations.
