Synopsis The Cancer Survivor Handbook by : Beth Leibson
According to the National Cancer Institute, there are an estimated 13.7 million living Americans who are cancer survivors. The institute expects that number to rise to almost 18 million over the next decade. The Institute of Medicine notes that patients diagnosed with cancer have an estimated 64% chance of surviving five years, up from 50% three decades ago. And most of them have lingering symptoms, both physical and emotional. The Cancer Survivor is a companion and guide for those millions of individuals who are finally done with treatments but are still on the journey to wholeness. Beth Leibson completed her chemotherapy and radiation in 2007. She had beat cancer, but was left with lingering memory issues, exhaustion, depression, pain, and the fear that at any point, the cancer could return. Here she tells the story of how she rebuilt her life, and shares advice from other experts, addressing the emotional, medical, and professional challenges of life after cancer. Here are the questions you’re afraid to ask (“When will my sex drive come back?”), the questions you hadn’t yet considered (“How do I reenter the work force after a ‘break’ of a year or more?”), and those you know you should be thinking about but haven’t had the energy for (“What supplements or alternative therapies should I be taking to regain my strength?”). Warm, honest, and full of sage advice, this is the book Leibson wishes she had had when the nightmare of cancer treatments drew to a close and the overwhelming reality of starting life over again began.

Synopsis Handbook of Oxidative Stress in Cancer: Therapeutic Aspects by : Sajal Chakraborti
This reference book, which is the second volume of Targeting Oxidative Stress in Cancer, explores oxidative stress as the potential therapeutic target for cancer therapy. The initial chapters discuss the molecular mechanisms of oxidative stress and its effects on different signaling pathways. Subsequently, the sections examine the impact of redox signaling on tumor cell proliferation and consider the therapeutic potential of dietary phytochemicals and nutraceuticals in reactive oxygen species (ROS)-induced cancer. In turn, it examines the evidence supporting the use of Vitamin C in cancer management, before presenting various synthetic and natural compounds that have therapeutic implications for oxidative stress-induced cancer. It also explores the correlation between non-coding RNA and oxidative stress. Furthermore, the book summarizes the role of stem cells in ROS-induced cancer therapy and reviews the therapeutic applications of nanoparticles to alter redox haemostasis in cancer cells. Lastly, it explores heat-shock proteins, ubiquitin ligases, and probiotics as potential therapeutic agents in ROS-mediated cancer. This book is a useful resource for basic and translational scientists as well as clinicians interested in the field of oxidative stress and cancer therapy.

Synopsis Chemical Induction of Cancer by : Joseph C. Arcos
In the approach to the analysis of disease, including, of course, cancer, two major thrusts may be distinguished. These may be referred to, in shorthand, as agents and processes: the causative agents (chemical, microbial, physical, environmental, and psychosocial) and the organismic processes, initiated and furthered by the agents, culminating in observable pathology (at the macromolecular, cytological, histological, organ function, locomotor, and behavioral levels). The past 25 years, since the appearance of the first volume of the predecessor series (1) authored by the Editors of this present volume, have seen an impressive number of studies on chemicals (and other agents) as etiologic factors in the induction of cancer. The major emphasis has been on the discovery of many chemical carcinogens of widely different structures, their metabolism by various tissues and cells, and, in turn, their molecular-biochemical effects on the cells. This rapidly expanded body of information, as effectively covered in the predecessor volumes, is an excellent entree to the second half of the overall problem of chemical carcinogenesis, the processes. The active agents trigger a large array of molecular-biochemical alterations to which the target cells, target tissues, and target organisms respond in many select and common ways. This second major aspect of the induction of cancer by chemicals (and by other agents)- the sequence of cellular and tissue changes clearly relevant to cancer-remains the challenge for the future.

Synopsis Breaking Tolerance to Pancreatic Cancer Unresponsiveness to Chemotherapy by :
Breaking Tolerance to Pancreatic Cancer Unresponsiveness to Chemotherapy edited by Dr. Nagaraju, PhD., DSc. focuses on overriding the resistance from chemotherapeutic drugs with a broader range of treatment options. It particularly focuses on stroma, tumor microenvironment, stem cells, stellate cells, transcription factors, growth factors, and important signaling pathways. This volume discusses topics such as pancreatic cancer biology, current therapeutic options, EMT, chemotherapy resistance mechanisms, and genetic manipulations and natural products to enhance the sensitivity of pancreatic cancer to chemotherapy. Additionally, it discusses small targeted molecules and pancreatic cancer trials, and nanotechnology-based drug delivery. Breaking Tolerance to Pancreatic Cancer Unresponsiveness to Chemotherapy is a valuable source for researchers and advanced students in cancer and oncology as well as clinicians and medical students who are interested in learning more about ways to break pancreatic cancer resistance to chemotherapy. - Modulates the biologic properties of stroma in pancreatic cancer by targeting the several chemotherapy resistance mechanisms to impede their malignant property by introducing new strategies and drugs - Provides information about on-going research as well as clinical data on pancreatic cancer and detailed descriptions about therapeutic options for easy understanding - Utilizes full color figures to help the understanding of the content and tables for easy comparison of information as well as quick access to it
