Named for a Colonial governor and created in 1770 from Augusta County, Botetourt County lies in the southern end of Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. At the time of its establishment, Botetourt's boundaries stretched westward from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Mississippi River and the Great Lakes. This area now encompasses 23 counties in Virginia as well as portions of West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Located at the fork of the Great Valley Road and the Wilderness Road, Botetourt served as the last outpost for many settlers moving into the western territories. Settled predominantly by Scots-Irish, German, and English immigrants, the county still reflects the influences of these strong cultures, and many original family names remain prominent. Botetourt is known for its agricultural production, as well as its natural resources: over the centuries, visitors have been drawn to the area's scenic beauty, healing springs, and trout-filled streams. Discovering family satisfies a curiosity. One learns of the challenges faced by ancestors, struggles endured, accomplishments shared, the good and sometimes the bad. In this writing, the author spent years researching, documenting and writing to absorb the wealth of Rhea family ancestors. The Rheas of what was Augusta County, Virginia, which later became Bath County and other counties, included in this writing descended from Robert, Archibald, and William Rhea who first settled in Augusta County in the mid-1700s and those of Margaret Rhea, a cousin to the brothers. These three Rhea brothers and Margaret are thought by researchers to be grandchildren of Matthew Campbell Rhea of Scotland and Ireland. And, so, the author’s story begins with him.

The history of African Americans in southern Appalachia after the Civil War has largely escaped the attention of scholars of both African Americans and the region. In Facing Freedom, Daniel Thorp relates the complex experience of an African American community in southern Appalachia as it negotiated a radically new world in the four decades following the Civil War. Drawing on extensive research in private collections as well as local, state, and federal records, Thorp narrates in intimate detail the experiences of black Appalachians as they struggled to establish autonomous families, improve their economic standing, operate black schools within a white-controlled school system, form independent black churches, and exercise expanded—if contested—roles as citizens and members of the body politic. Black out-migration increased markedly near the close of the nineteenth century, but the generation that transitioned from slavery to freedom in Montgomery County established the community institutions that would survive disenfranchisement and Jim Crow. Facing Freedom reveals the stories and strategies of those who pioneered these resilient bulwarks against the rising tide of racism.

This is the definitive work on Americans taken prisoner during the Revolutionary War. The bulk of the book is devoted to personal accounts, many of them moving, of the conditions endured by U.S. prisoners at the hands of the British, as preserved in journals or diaries kept by physicians, ships' captains, and the prisoners themselves. Of greater genealogical interest is the alphabetical list of 8,000 men who were imprisoned on the British vessel The Old Jersey, which the author copied from the papers of the British War Department and incorporated in the appendix to the work. Also included is a Muster Roll of Captain Abraham Shepherd's Company of Virginia Riflemen and a section on soldiers of the Pennsylvania Flying Camp who perished in prison, 1776-1777.
