Synopsis Blood, Sweat, and Fear by : Jeremy Milloy

"Going postal. We hear the chilling phrase and think of the rogue employee who snaps. But Blood, Sweat, and Fear shows that on-the-job bloodshed never occurs in isolation. Using violence as a lens, Jeremy Milloy provides fresh insights into the everyday workings of capitalism, class conflict, race, and gender in the United States and Canada. The result is a study that reveals the workplace as a battleground--one that saw a late-century paradigm shift from the collective violence of strikes and riots to the individualized violence of assaults and shootings. Explosive and original, Blood, Sweat, and Fear brings historical perspective to contemporary debates about North American workplace violence."--Back cover

Synopsis Hollywood Bloodshed by : James Kendrick

In Hollywood Bloodshed, James Kendrick presents a fascinating look into the political and ideological instabilities of the 1980s as studied through the lens of cinema violence. Kendrick uses in-depth case studies to reveal how dramatic changes in the film industry and its treatment of cinematic bloodshed during the Reagan era reflected shifting social tides as Hollywood struggled to find a balance between the lucrative necessity of screen violence and the rising surge of conservatism. As public opinion shifted toward the right and increasing emphasis was placed on issues such as higher military spending, family values, and “money culture,” film executives were faced with an epic dilemma: the violent aspects of cinema that had been the studios’ bread and butter were now almost universally rejected by mainstream audiences. Far from eliminating screen bloodshed altogether, studios found new ways of packaging violence that would allow them to continue to attract audiences without risking public outcry, ushering in a period of major transition in the film industry. Studios began to shy away from the revolutionary directors of the 1970s—many of whom had risen to fame through ideologically challenging films characterized by a more disturbing brand of violence—while simultaneously clearing the way for a new era in film. The 1980s would see the ascent of entertainment conglomerates and powerful producers and the meteoric rise of the blockbuster—a film with no less violence than its earlier counterparts, but with action-oriented thrills rather than more troubling images of brutality. Kendrick analyzes these and other radical cinematic changes born of the conservative social climate of the 1980s, including the disavowal of horror films in the effort to present a more acceptable public image; the creation of the PG-13 rating to designate the gray area of movie violence between PG and R ratings; and the complexity of marketing the violence of war movies for audience pleasure. The result is a riveting study of an often overlooked, yet nevertheless fascinating time in cinema history. While many volumes have focused on the violent films of the New American Cinema directors of the 1970s or the rise of icons such as Woo, Tarantino, and Rodriguez in the 1990s, Kendrick’s Hollywood Bloodshed bridges a major gap in film studies. This comprehensive volume offers much-needed perspective on a decade that altered the history of Hollywood—and American culture—forever.

Synopsis Triumph Amidst Bloodshed by : Craig L. Claybrook

"TRIUMPH AMIDST BLOODSHED Civil War Soldiers Spiritual Victories give eye witness accounts about hundreds of Union Soldiers during those fateful days. An organization, called the United States Christian Commission, sprang forth from the Y.M.C.A. To care for Soldiers throughout the duration of the war. More than 5,000 pastors and Christian laypeople contributed their time and thousands more donated Resources to the effort. At the conclusion of the war, these "delegates," As they were called, submitted around 10,000 stories, of which more than 500 were selected for publication in the book, Incidents of the U.S. Christian Commission (1869). This present book is an updated version of the Earlier in both language and writing style and gives the reader an amazing glimpse into the tragedy and triumph of the times. Simply put, the book presents men coming to Christ, coming back to Christ, or going to Christ. It shows how God used this incredible, yet largely unknown, ministry. In as much as possible, TRIUMPH is well documented in terms of time frames and Battles, names of participants and the eye witnesses who provided these Stories. The major contribution of this edition is the reference index which makes the stories highly accessible. This illustrative material is well-suited for pastors and other communication professionals. The book is equally inspiring for history or military buffs, seekers of truth, workers. In Christian ministry, and those who want to see some "high intensity" Christianity (revival) in action. The moving stories fall in the range from interesting to gut wrenching with a little humor thrown in as well. The editors wish for this book to be a fitting contribution to the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War with its accounts of the soldiers, many of whom gave their limbs while still others gave "their last full measure of Devotion."
