This book provides the reader with the a comprehensive summary of the recent advances in the study of whitecaps. It is the first major publication focusing specifically on whitecaps and their role in a variety of climate-relevant air-sea interaction processes since the publication, in 1986, of Oceanic Whitecaps, and Their Role in Air-Sea Exchange Processes, edited by Edward Charles Monahan and Gearoid Mac Niocaill (published by Springer). This book also provides the interested reader with a review of the initial work done on this topic in the second half of the 20th Century.

Synopsis Ride the Scorpion by : Lyndall Baker Landauer
At a time when she has no job and no prospects, Christy Ogden receives an invitation to join an old friend on a sailing trip around the Channel Islands off the coast of Southern California. It is 1939 and the world is on the brink of war, but Christy needs a break. She knows little about sailing and does not know Jean Dryden very well, but she is determined to take the opportunity to get away from home. Her mother died a year before, but her father has not recovered from it. He has been laid off from work even though the Depression is supposed to be over. Christy feels guilty, but at least her father will not have to worry about feeding and clothing her for two weeks. It is a fateful decision. In Santa Barbara, Christy meets Jean and they take off in her beautiful sailing yawl, called the Queen, to sail to Santa Cruz Island almost immediately. For several days, Jean teaches Christy to sail, they anchor in several coves and get to know each other. Christy notices that Jean has many ways to avoid direct questions. Christy wonders why Jean asked her, a very slight acquaintance, to come along on this trip. Slowly, it comes out that Jean has a mission. She thinks that the Japanese are about to invade the mainland of the United States. As proof, she mentions a number of transmission she has heard on the marine band radio. When she hears another, she will discuss it with Christy. Meanwhile, they meet a number of men and women on other boats and are invited to dinner on a yacht, picnic on a beach and to the boat of a man that Christy instinctively dislikes. Al Melrose is traveling with Matt Price, whom Christy likes immediately and cannot understand why he is with Al, the crude boor. Discovering that Al is a Harvard graduate and an expert in International relations, makes him more curious, but no more likable. While Jean is still away from the boat at a picnic, Christy discovers a book on the shelf in the boat's salon. Called Riddle of the Sands and published in 1903, she begins to read this fascinating story. It does not take her long to realize that the plot is similar to the trek Jean and Christy have been living. In light of the evasions and half-truths Jean has told her, Christy does not mention the book yet. Jean finally reveals that the broadcasts she has heard are in Japanese and Christy is the only one she knows who is familiar with the language. When Jean asks why Christy learned the language, Christy tells her the story of her own great grandmother who came from Japan. When she finally hears a message, she is puzzled by the fact that it is spoken in stiff, poor Japanese. Their boat is searched one night when they are asleep and they leave the next morning to sail east to Catalina Island. Jean is sure that an old flame of hers, whom they met their first night out, is behind it all. Christy is not so sure. After a day at the west end of the island, they decided to go to Avalon, the only town on the island. It is on the east end and they sail along the south shore to get there. Soon they discover that their engine does not work and they are nearly smashed on the rocks at Little Harbor. Jean's superior knowledge of sailing techniques saves them. The next day they set out again to sail to Avalon. In the meantime, there has been another broadcast and Christy tries to translate it. Christy asks Jean if she has deliberately created this trip and this danger to follow the plot of the Riddle of the Sands, the book she found in the Queen,. Jean denies it vehemently. As they round the east end of Catalina, they are nearly knocked down by a Santa Ana wind blowing forty knots from the east. Again Jean's knowledge saves them and they are able to sail up to a dock without mishap, watched by a gaggle of tourists and locals on the dock. They hire a local mechanic to work on the engine and he reveals that it has been deliberately sabotaged. Just as they should be trying to find out who has done this, Jean

Synopsis The Attempted Murder of Teddy Roosevelt by : Burt Solomon
The Attempted Murder of Teddy Roosevelt is a historical thriller from award-winning political journalist Burt Solomon, featuring Teddy Roosevelt's near death...accident or assassination attempt? Theodore Roosevelt had been president for less than a year when on a tour in New England his horse-drawn carriage was broadsided by an electric trolley. TR was thrown clear but his Secret Service bodyguard was killed instantly. The trolley’s motorman pleaded guilty to manslaughter and the matter was quietly put to rest. But was it an accident or an assassination attempt...and would there be another “accident” soon? The Attempted Murder of Teddy Roosevelt casts this event in a darker light. John Hay, the Secretary of State, finds himself in pursuit of a would-be assassin, investigating the motives of TR’s many enemies, including political rivals and the industrial trusts. He crosses paths with luminaries of the day, such as best-pal Henry Adams, Emma Goldman, J.P. Morgan, Mark Hanna, and (as an investigatory sidekick) the infamous Nellie Bly, who will help Hay protect the man who wants to transform a nation. Synopsis Open by : Nate Klemp
“This wise and deeply relevant book guides us in navigating the seductive trance of a growingly virtual world... and living with our full creativity, intelligence, and love.” —Tara Brach, author of Radical Acceptance and Trusting the Gold A New York Times bestselling author shares a powerful new approach for living in a distracted and divided world with greater engagement, freedom, and openness. With the avalanche of information we get every day, closing down our minds and hearts seems to be the only way to survive. We close down to our inner experience by compulsively checking our devices. We close down to others by getting caught in echo chambers of outrage. But what if there’s another way? What if being more open to life is actually what brings us sanity and happiness? In this climate of distraction and division, Nate Klemp’s Open offers a path back to a way of living that is expansive, creative, and filled with wonder. Drawing on new science, age-old practices, and personal stories, Klemp examines why we close down when faced with stressors or threats, then reveals how we can train ourselves to open up to the fullness that life offers—even when frightened, outraged, or heartbroken. Join him to explore: • The uniquely modern challenges that make closing down easier and more tempting than ever • Experiential stories of psychedelic-assisted therapy, opening to political adversaries, meditation, and other tools for opening the mind • The Three Shifts of Opening—how to break the habit of mind wandering, approach instead of withdraw, and enlarge the size of your perspective • The Open Toolkit—a treasury of meditations, investigations, and habit-changing practices to open your mind Expanding the size of the mind may sound subtle —yet the results can utterly transform our lives. “When we open to life,” says Klemp, “we’re no longer stuck in here fighting against our thoughts on the inside or a crazed world on the outside. We’re connected. Our minds and lives get bigger. There’s more room, more perspective, more possibility. This is what it means to be free.”

Synopsis The Man in the Arena by : Thomas L. Cooper
Fly with Captain Tom Cooper on this most incredible roller coaster ride from a rural, Mayberry-ish community in the foot hills of North Carolina to the apex of the scheduled airline world. A superb story teller, Captain Cooper takes you on a breathtaking trip with intermediate stops in the jungles of South America, revolutions in the tropics, the “sometimes” exciting exploits of a scheduled airline pilot and finally lands you on the top floor, mahogany row, of the volatile airline community. Whether you are a professional or private pilot or just an “arm chair” adventurer, with his simple but vivid writing style, he escorts you through his 60 years of aviation experiences with page after page of a literary reality show that can only be narrated by someone who has actually lived it. Captain Cooper shares his experiences, the good times and the bad, the wins and the losses, with clarity and with a simple credo that to be a success one must, to paraphrase Teddy Roosevelt, be “in the arena” and experience failures along with any successes that might come your way without fear of criticism or admonition. And…….never, ever, let ‘em see you sweat!

Synopsis Beyond Bend It Like Beckham by : Timothy F. Grainey
Though it burst into public consciousness only with the 1999 World Cup, women’s soccer has been around almost as long as its male counterpart, flourishing in England during and after World War I. From the rise of women’s soccer following Title IX legislation in the early seventies to the watershed 1999 World Cup performance that turned the American team into instant celebrities, soccer is now the most popular sport for girls and women, with participation growing exponentially worldwide. Beyond “Bend It Like Beckham” presents the first in-depth global analysis of the women’s game—both where it has come from and where it is headed. With commentary from key players, coaches, and administrators, Timothy F. Grainey follows the sport’s reach into the unlikeliest places today, even countries where women were banned from playing soccer just a few short years ago. Though women in the United States and Canada still fight for equal treatment and funding, their situations differs markedly from the hostility, abuse, and even outright bans that some women still encounter in trying to pursue an activity they love. Through the prism of soccer, this book explores the struggle for women’s rights abroad, in countries as diverse as Sweden, Russia, South Africa, Pakistan, Australia, and Iran.
