This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 6th International Workshop on Ambient Assisted Living, IWAAL 2014, held in Belfast, UK, in December 2014. The 42 full papers presented with 12 papers of the workshop WAGER 2014 and 10 papers of a special session HTA were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions. The focus of the papers is on following topics: ADL detection, recognition, classification; behavioural changes, coaching and education; AAL design and technical evaluation; expression, mood and speech recognition; health monitoring, risk prediction and assessment; localization; and user preferences, usability, AAL acceptance and adoption.

This book provides insight into the significant area of public art and memorials in Berlin. Through diverse selected examples, grouped according to their basic character and significance, the most important art projects produced in the period since World War II are presented and discussed. Both as a critical theoretical work and rich photo book, this volume is a unique selection of Berlin’s diverse visual elements, contemporary and from the recent past. Some artworks are very famous and are already symbols of Berlin while others are less well known. The reader is led through seven chapters: Creative City Berlin, Introduction to Public Art, Public Art in Berlin, the Celebration of Berlin’s 750th Anniversary in 1987, Temporary public art, Socialist Realism in Art, and Urban Memorials. The chapter Public Art in Berlin discusses selected projects, Bundestag Public Art Collection, Public Art at Potsdamer Platz and The City and the river – a renewed relationship. The chapter on urban memorials discusses: Remembering the Divided City and Holocaust Memorials in Berlin. The book delivers nine interviews with artists whose Berlin work is revealed through this volume (Bernar Venet, Hubertus von der Goltz, Dani Karavan, Juan Garaizabal, Susanne Lorenz, Kalliopi Lemos, Frank Thiel, Karla Sachse and Nikolaus Koliusis).

The book aims to provide city administrators and planners with a tool to accompany them in experimenting with the regeneration of no longer used parts of the built heritage, called leftovers, by adopting an innovative approach. A new and radically different form of project, with the task of proposing a new aesthetic code and a style of thought aimed at creating shelters for nomads of the third millennium. In the design field, the 21st century will be destined to measure itself against temporariness and precariousness, also in terms of aesthetic practices. Based on this hypothesis, the text identifies the design of the unfinished as the perspective for attributing to the leftovers a character, which is representative of the conditions of the just begun century. Through a transdisciplinary, exhibition-like and reversible approach, the elements of degradation of the existing work are welcomed in the project as a "gift", to be translated into a syntax aimed at giving form and meaning to the internal and external environments, with the inclusion of "additional components".

Public and situated display technologies can have an important impact on individual and social behaviour and present us with particular interesting new design considerations and challenges. While there is a growing body of research exploring these design considerations and social impact this work remains somewhat disparate, making it difficult to assimilate in a coherent manner. This book brings together the perspectives of key researchers in the area of public and situated display technology. The chapters detail research representing the social, technical and interactional aspects of public and situated display technologies. The underlying concern common to these chapters is how these displays can be best designed for collaboration, coordination, community building and mobility. Presenting them together allows the reader to examine everyday display activities within the context of emerging technological possibilities.
