Synopsis by : Stephen Goldfinger
Thirty-year-old David Freid isn't sure what to do with his life. He hates his job as a clerical assistant at the City University of New York, and his monologues as a stand-up comedian twice a week at Patti's Caf aren't well received. In addition to suffering from chronic prostatitis, he can't find a girl. The turning point comes when David discovers a photograph of his urologist's daughter, Kara Rosenblum. Despite the fact that she doesn't know he exists, he becomes convinced they are meant to be together. At the same time, an elusive talent scout from Comedy World is expected to make a surprise appearance at the club where David performs. The problem is that nobody knows if the scout is legitimate or not. In a moment of clarity, David decides that if he can get the urologist's daughter and the talent scout to both show up at his Saturday night gig, he will not only get discovered but win the love of the girl with whom he is obsessed.

Synopsis Recreating Motherhood by : Barbara Katz Rothman
Presents a woman-centered, class-sensitive way of understanding motherhood and the family in the face of scientific advances in genetics and fertility technology. Claims that the real needs of people in families have been swept aside in an attempt to reduce the complex process of human reproduction to a clinical event controlled by medical technology. Suggests ways to accomplish social and legal changes that would allow technological advances and evolving gender roles to affirm the mother-child relationship without cost to women's identities. This edition contains a new chapter on how advances in reproductive technology and genetics combine with new marketing to pose troubling social questions. Originally published in 1989 by W. W. Norton and Company. The author teaches sociology at the City University of New York. Annotation copyrighted by Book News Inc., Portland, OR

Synopsis A Darkness of Her Own by : Kenneth Zarecor
A Darkness of Her Own chronicles what happens when a couples most joyous occasionthe birth of their first childgoes horribly wrong. A riveting personal story and compelling court room drama, it begins on the day that Ken and Lorraine Zarecor meet for the first time. The story follows them through their courtship, marriage, and birth of their only child, Heatherand the shocking and heartbreaking events that followed. Heather suffered severe brain damage at birth. While trying to preserve her life and dignity, her parents encountered many obstacles. The tragedy caused turmoil in their lives and their marriage. They found the medical professionals and governmental agencies largely impotent, intolerant, or unwilling to offer assistance. These failures forced the Zarecors to turn to the courts to discover the cause of Heathers brain damage, to redress the consequences of medical malpractice. Over the course of ten years, they encountered many obstacles, including missing or altered medical records, and attorneys who misstated facts attempting to protect guilty parties. Their goal was to insure that Heather would have the best possible care for the rest of her life, and, in the end, to see that she got justice.

Synopsis Next by : James Hynes
Kevin Quinn is a standard-variety American male: middle-aged, liberal-leaning, self-centered, emotionally damaged, generally determined to avoid both pain and responsibility. As his relationship with his girlfriend approaches a turning point, and his career seems increasingly pointless, he decides to secretly fly to a job interview in Austin, Texas. Aboard the plane, Kevin is simultaneously attracted to the young woman in the seat next to him and panicked by a new wave of terrorism in Europe and the UK. He lands safely with neuroses intact and full of hope that the job, the expansive city, and the girl from the plane might yet be his chance for reinvention. His next eight hours make up this novel, a tour-de-force of mordant humor, brilliant observation, and page-turning storytelling.
