Synopsis 3D-Computation of Incompressible Internal Flows by : Gabriel Sottas
The aim of the 1989 GAMM Workshop on 3D-Computation of Incompressible Internal Flows was the simulation of a realistic incompressible flow field in an important industrial application. In view of the difficulties involved in formulating such a test case, requiring the availability of an experimental data base, extreme care had to be taken in the selection of the proper one. Professor I. L. Ryhming's proposal, that the flow through a Francis turbine configuration or parts thereof would be feasible as a test case, because of the numerical challenges as well as the possibility to produce an experimental data base by using the experimental facilities of the Hydraulic Machines and Fluid Mechanics Institute (IMHEF) at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL), was accepted by the GAMM Committee in April 1987. A scientific committee, formed under the chairmanship of Professor I. L. Ryhming, met a few times to decide on the Francis turbine configuration, the test case specifications, etc. , whereby the design input came from the water turbine experts. This committee decided to restrict the studies to the three following typical applications for the best operating point of the turbine: • simulation of the 3D flow in a Francis runner in rotation • simulation of the 3D flow in the distributor (stay and guide vane rings) of this turbine • simulation of the 3D flow in an elbow draft tube The simultaneous computation of two or three of these geometries was encouraged.

Synopsis Modelling Fluid Flow by : János Vad
Modelling Fluid Flow presents invited lectures, workshop summaries and a selection of papers from a recent international conference CMFF '03 on fluid technology. The lectures follow the current evolution and the newest challenges of the computational methods and measuring techniques related to fluid flow. The workshop summaries reflect the recent trends, open questions and unsolved problems in the mutually inspiring fields of experimental and computational fluid mechanics. The papers cover a wide range of fluids engineering, including reactive flow, chemical and process engineering, environmental fluid dynamics, turbulence modelling, numerical methods, and fluid machinery.

Synopsis Computational Fluid Dynamics on Parallel Systems by : Siegfried Wagner
Within the DFG -Schwerpunktprogramm "Stromungssimulation mit Hochleistungsrechnern" and within the activities of the French-German cooperation of CNRS and DFG a DFG symposium on "Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) on Parallel Systems" was organized at the Institut fur Aerodynamik and Gasdynamik of the Stuttgart University, 9-10 December 1993. This symposium was attended by 37 scientists. The scientific program consisted of 18 papers that considered finite element, finite volume and a two step Taylor Galerkin algorithm for the numerical solution of the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations on massively parallel computers with MIMD and SIMD architecture and on work station clusters. Incompressible and compressible, steady and unsteady flows were considered including turbu lent combustion with complex chemistry. Structured and unstructured grids were used. High numerical efficiency was demonstrated by multiplicative, additive and multigrid methods. Shared memory, virtual shared memory and distributed memory systems were investigated, in some cases based on an automatic grid partitioning technique. Various methods for domain decomposition were investigated. The key point of these methods is the resolution of the inter face problem because the matrix involved can be block dense. Multilevel decomposition can be very efficient using multifrontal algorithm. The numerical methods include explicit and implicit schemes. In the latter case the system of equations is often solved by a Gauss -Seidel line re laxation technique.

Synopsis Numerical Treatment of Coupled Systems by : Wolfgang Hackbusch
The coupling considered in this volume may be of physical or numerical nature. Examples of the first kind are the solid-fluid interactions, microelectronic systems, and the coupled modelling in groundwater flow. Examples of the latter kind are the domain or subspace decomposition, the local defect correction method, and the very important FEM-BEM coupling.

Synopsis Adaptive Methods — Algorithms, Theory and Applications by : W. Hackbusch
The GAMM Committee for "Efficient Numerical Methods for Partial Differential Equations" organizes workshops on subjects concerning the algorithmical treat ment of partial differential equations. The topics are discretization methods like the finite element and finite volume method for various types of applications in structural and fluid mechanics. Particular attention is devoted to advanced solu tion techniques. th The series of such workshops was continued in 1993, January 22-24, with the 9 Kiel-Seminar on the special topic "Adaptive Methods Algorithms, Theory and Applications" at the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel. The seminar was attended by 76 scientists from 7 countries and 23 lectures were given. The list of topics contained general lectures on adaptivity, special discretization schemes, error estimators, space-time adaptivity, adaptive solvers, multi-grid me thods, wavelets, and parallelization. Special thanks are due to Michael Heisig, who carefully compiled the contribu tions to this volume. November 1993 Wolfgang Hackbusch Gabriel Wittum v Contents Page A. AUGE, G. LUBE, D.
